Dogs can be used for hunting and treeing game, carrying some gear and protection to name a few. The downside when your trying to get by on rabbits and squirles and you have another mouth to feed is it worth it? It's a tough decision, of course the size of the dog dictates a lot when it comes to sharing your dinner. It's gona be tough to provide for an 100 lb American Bulldog compared to a 35 lb cattle dog. Does anyone have dogs worked into their plans?

We have 15 dogs, no joke. While it is expensive to feed them, on the farm property they have a purpose. More than anything they are a part of our security here. If a twig moves outside, we know it. Many times it is nothing but a possum roaming around, but other times it is something we need to check out in the dead of night. Overall we feel the benefits outway the expense in our case. As far as a bugging out situation....that would be quite another story for us...lol.

Yeah of course LoLa is part of my SHTF plan; same as Hunter63 said, my dogs are my kids.

She's a Kissy Buddy to me, not so much to people she doesn't know ;P
Her Prey Drive is ridiculous, Geckos and other small critters don't stand a chance around the house. She almost caught an opossum!
I'm curious to know what would happen in a rabbit or bird hunting expedition. I'm not sure I'd get any rabbit or bird LOL!
I also have the story about the Copperhead incident posted here. Even though it was a PITA, and scary at the time, she actually was guarding and protecting us!

So of course she's bugging out with me!

We are soon to be dog owners and there are other dogs within the group I would expect to be with in a survival situation. Dog food will be a major storage item in our group.

Since we couldn't have kids ( the two legged kind) our dogs are sorta our kids. So we have and are prepping for them. We have about 18-20 months of food for them currently, a year of medicines for them ( flea meds, vitamins and such as well as one's daily meds) Having two more sets of eye's and ears help as well.

That's when you build yourself a fish wheel and dry your dog salmon. One fish per day per dog along with a bit of kibble etc. Of course, these are working dogs, not pampered house pets.

I only have room for three kinds of dogs;

hot dogs
corn dogs
chilidogs

After all, the hot dog gets its name from the Germans' customary use of dog meat in frankfurters.

Best alarm / criminal deterrent going.

Mine eats the Offal / table scraps etc. I only suppliment with dog food. Even when hunting I don't worry since the dog will either get itself something or I will share what I have.

Should I kill something the left over gut pile after checking for diseases is the dogs.

There is a reason man tamed / partnered up with dogs so very long ago, they help more than they harm.

JMTC< YMMV

My dog is my child. I took her in and therefore accept the FULL responsibility of her. Therefore she is just not a convenience to me, she truly is my friend and 4 legged child.

I was going to write something very profound and contriversal here concerning breeding cycles, food supply and the reason cooking pots are the size they are but I already made my neighbor mad this morning and I do not think I can cope with ticking off most of the forum.

Since I am bugging in and not out, to old and disable to run anywhere anymore, They are part of my plan including acquiring back up food for them. I just store it in blue barrels.

With my childern scattered all over the US, Coast to Coast, including Hawaii, they have become my kids and my responsibility.

The very worst case if they don't make it I guess I will have dry dog food to fall back on.
