View Full Version : Transitioning from the new-old to the old-new...

Camping/hiking accident...house fire...flood...natural disaster...economic collapse...EMP triggered by a solar coronal mass ejection... SHTF...TEOTWAWKI...

There are many good reasons to learn "survival" skills and to develop survival plans and kits. Perhaps one of the most important, long-term survival skills is the ability to ADAPT...being able to adapt to the new what-is.

In any situation that would call for using one's survival skills (especially long- term), it's likely that life would become more "primitive." There would likely be less reality TV...less connectivity for the I-Pad...less available electricity for our modern conveniences. Those who successfully survive and thrive will likely be living a lifestyle more typical of the 1950's (or earlier) than the 20teens. This means there will likely be an abundance of now-seemingly-useless, modern materials that could be used for something other than their intended purposes.

In this "survival" spirit (adaptability...waste-not-want-not...etc.), these photos are just a fun and slightly useless example of how to make the transition from the new-old to the old-new.

Just for fun...

That is simply not funny at all. You do know a repairman is going to have to fix that thing don't you? And you'll probably say something like, "Oh, it just fell off the wall." Like I'd buy that. If I had a nickel......

I only work on "electric" stuff.......That works on FM.....That there is "electronic" stuff, works on PFM..... just toss it, and replace the board.

I'm going to have to hide this from my 10 year old or I'll be neck deep in high tech bird houses.

Thad.

Then again this past Saturday he went all ABO on me. We went out early to trim some brush out of a drainage ditch and I noticed he was gathering up certain branches into a pile of his own, so I just sort of watched to see what was on his mind.

Then a bit later he came and asked me for some string, and I had a piece or two of bailing twine that I had twisted into some simple cordage to help train my fingers better since the stroke as usual, and he got a couple pieces about 6 or 8 feet long and wandered off toward his pile again.

So I go on and notice he is stripping the branches off his pile of brush and saving the longer pieces, and pretty soon he is wanting to borrow a cutting tool, well since I was using the machete and did not want him to use it without me right there I gave him the pruning shears and he went to happly clipping them off for a bit, then returned them to me.

So next thing I notice is he wants a hammer but we don't have one with us so he says ok and goes and finds a nice rock and stats bending it into a forked stick and tying in in place making a stone hammer.

He then finds a sharp rock (probably chert) and starts scraping his sticks and getting points on the end of some.

then driving them into the ground and ended up rigging up a "trap" out in the pasture. Well there isn't anything smaller than a horse or goat likely to run into it and it wasn't really gonna work, but he had so much fun and When I asked him about it he said he had seen a youtube on making an abo ax and he wanted to see if it worked to make a trap.

That kid can get more fun out of a dab of string, some sticks and rocks than most can out of all the electronic stuff on the planet.

Of course now I'm stuck (actually I'm tickled) with the promise of showing him how to do a real figure 4 trap this week end.

Well as usual I rambled off on a tanget, I"m sorry but that bird house just got the brain thinking about the kid and I know he will adapt if things do go grubby. Hope the other three do as well.

Thad.

Sounds like me as a kid Thad, I could have more fun with duct tape and some cardboard than all the toys in the world. Let alone when I got my hands on some scrap wood and nails lol

I'm soooo old they didn't have duct tape back when.......did get a big rock one year, Dad called it an exercise rock..........
But old refrigator boxes did make a great pirate ship wrapped around the picnic table.

Give that kid credit, using what he has.....and already likes tools....these kids don't mug little old ladies.....congrats.

Those boxes made great tanks too! Just get in and start crawling....running over everything.
