If you are interested in homestead gardens then you may be interested in how colonial gardens were grown. Generally self sufficient and self sustaining, they might give you some ideas for your own garden. One of the best ways to see how it was done, including types of plants, is to visit a modern day "colonial" garden. There are any number of historic towns, farms and villages that re-enact colonial or frontier life including the way they gardened. Here is a link to a few around the country but there is sure to be one near you.

I hooked my roof downspout to a barrel, then installed a garden hose valve near the bottom of the barrel. I get enough water for about 2 months stored in this barrel. Top of barrel is screened to prevent downspout debris and mosquitos from getting in.
