Seems Smith & Wesson has just come out with a new model in their M&P line called the Shield. It is a small, "single stack" (actually very slightly double stacked to add just a little more capacity than a true single stack) pistol designed for very easy concealed carry. It is offered in both 9mm Luger and .40 S&W. Here are some of the basic stats:

Model: M&P SHIELD™
Caliber: 9mm or 40 S&W
Capacity: 7 Round & 8 Round (in 9mm) 6 Round & 7 Round (in .40 S&W)
Action: Striker Fire
Barrel Length: 3.1" / 7.874 cm
Front Sight: White Dot
Rear Sight: White 2-Dot
Overall Length: 6.1" / 15.5 cm
Frame Width: .95" / 2.413 cm
Overall Height: 4.6" / 11.684 cm (with the longer magazine in place)
Weight: 19.0 oz / 538.7 g
Frame Material: Polymer
Barrel/Slide Finish: Black Melonite® 68 HRc
Trigger Pull: 6.5 lbs. +/-
Sight Radius: 5.3" / 13.3 cm

It took me awhile but, after calling almost every gun dealer in a 200 mile radius I did finally find one that had one in stock. So, with only a little bit of begging I got my wife to consent to my picking it up. So far I am really impressed. This gun seems far and away superior to any of its other single stack 9mm competitors. I'm hoping to be able to get in some serious range time within the next week or so and I'll try to get some picture of how it performs.
