Hi! I'm a youngish woman living in the Twin Cities area. I'm mainly interested in foraging. I came across wildcrafting.net and I wondered (so I shall ask): are the maps of wild edibles widely in use? Do a lot of people save their own private maps there, or are the 2700 public plant locations (a good quarter of which appear to be cattail in Illinois/Florida) all there is to it?

Thanks for the replies. As a clarification: I've been thinking of setting up some kind of Google Maps thing for the plants I pick, just for me to keep track of them. So, Google Maps has a little bit nicer interface, but I would do this and make a bunch of my places public if I knew it would be helpful for somebody. There's all this wonderful infrastructure to communicate information, and it just seems like the actual usage is really dominated by just a few people marking just a few (kinds of) plants in just a few localities.

When Chris first launched the Wildcrafting site he had a little challenge/contest, asking members to mark/introduce/photograph as many plants as possible. For me, it was a way to start learning about wild edibles. As to the locations I entered, they were on trips that I took around Florida on business and traveling to a couple of meet and greet camping trips that some forum members did. That is the reason you will see an abundance of cattail, goldenrod, and cabbage palm - they were easy for me to identify in my travels. Your introduction is a good reminder to me that I really should continue on with my learning. I think that if you mark your plants on the map that it may prove to be useful to somebody.
