I dug out a older propane gas lantern from the barn. I have a couple like this. It's been at least 25 years since I've used this lantern. It has a stable base which is nice to have. Not sure how old it is, thinking maybe late sixties or early seventies.

Older than that. Try mid-50's. See if it's stamped with a TX maybe 700? 900? don't remember off the top of my head but it's a TX something.

Look on that black valve and see if the date's not on it. It probably is and it's just dirty.

Now that is cool, I have never seen one like that.

If that's made when I think it was it will have an original Pyrex globe. Pyrex, when it was originally made is danged near bomb proof. It's harder than Billy Hell to break early Pyrex. They changed the formula so it wouldn't be so tough. They couldn't sell replacements because nothing broke. Not just those globes but dishware or anything made from early Pyrex.

thanks for the comments fellas

it's marked tx 700. I wiped the patina (LOL) from the knob and couldn't see a date. I think I'll wipe it down, hang a mantle in it and use it for a table lamp. The other lantern needs a globe, not sure if it's a common size.

the globe seems thicker than the newer globes but it may be my imagination.

I don't know what kind the other is but take a look at this and see if it will fit.

They are thicker.

I don't know of any sources for old Bernz 0 Matic lanterns. I'll bet there are some I've just never picked one up so I never looked for anyplace to source parts. You might touch base with the Bernz 0 Matic folks and see if they know of any sources for parts.

It's just a cool old lantern and I think both would make great, fully functional, lanterns once you get them cleaned up. You can even buy new stickers for old Coleman stuff so there's got to be a parts source for B-O-M.

On the date, I'm pretty certain it's on the handle. I don't remember if they are etched or if it was a foil sticker that went on it but I'm thinking there was an arrow and the date engraved in it. The ON arrow was probably in white.

Awesome looking piece. I have few old lanterns around that I have picked up here and there. I have never seen one of those, but looks to be great conversation piece as well as functional. Thanks for sharing.

thanks for the comments. What's the best way to clean this lantern up? I thought about fine steel wool and a splash of hoppes#9.

Birdman, I'm not sure what type of pressurized kerosene lantern you have but preheat is important on pressurized kerosene lanterns. I have a petromax kerosene lantern and it works well.

I wouldn't use any steel wool on the painted area. Just clean it up with some Hoppes or WD40 and a rag. It would be a shame to ruin the patina unless you were doing a full on restoration. I use WD40 on almost everything, it seems to greatly slow the oxidation and cleans it up nice.

If you find another laying around, I would be interested in it.
