I did a 4 mile hike on the river today fishing the holes as I went. In recent years I have gotten used to carrying my off hand gear in a canvas backpack but today I decided to use my ash trap basket. Not sure how long I've had it but I do know it's been a long time and been used many times to haul traps and fur over the years. Now I know that few of you think about a pack basket for carrying your gear but after this little trip today I got to tell ya by the time I got where I was going it was (imo) a much more comfortable carry then if I had been using my fancy backpack. Do any of you other guys have and use wood strip pack baskets?(trap baskets) If you do what do you think of them for packing your gear?

Actually, more than you think. Hunter has posted on some nice ones he's made. A couple of our Alaska crew has posted on them as well. Here's a thread Hunter started on his.

You know what we say, if you works for you then it works for me.

I have a meduim and a large basket I have used many times, but not lately. My basket with straps weighs nearly 9 pounds.

The more basket/pack you carry the less gear you can carry.

I have one of my packs that I put a kitchen size trash can in. I use it for stinky things like fuel and oil and logging stuff for the chainsaw.
