I have two pups, older pups now. The Rotty use to run the woods with me and chase hogs and other large critters but now she has a bum leg.

The second mutt is the one I would take if I was going into the woods for any length of time. He his half boxer and half daschound. Meanest little (big) sob you've ever met. Think of a weener dog with boxer legs but still having the weener dog attitude. MEAN!

Does not eat much, great watchdog, barks loud and on command shuts up, thinks he can kick butt, yet knows when to back off. Excellant squirrel and rabbit locater.

Had the perfect dog years ago. She was a blue chow, best deer tracker and locater ever, listened perfectly kinda read my mind. Trust, on an outing she cut her leg pretty bad, so I washed out with soap and water, dried, super glued the wound shut and then sewed it up with a needle and deer back sinew. Had to use a reg. needle and pliers, no suters. She just let me do it, no hassles or biting. Kept her on lead alot as she had a tendency to scare people. She onetime ate through a set of aluminum bars and scared her mouth right above her canines. To look at her, looked like she had 3" canines.

What kind of survival mutts do ya'll have?

I prefer the med. to larger small mutts.

well while I don't consider them survival mutts they do tend to go with me quite often. I must say I have had many many breeds shepperds , labs, collies, wolf, malimute, akita's. But my breed of choice is now definately the rottweiler . I used to breed them in MN and I kept momma and 2 of her daughters, she is now 6 and 130 pounds and she is the best dog I've ever come to know. She produced 47 pups in her time and never a bad one good temperment obedient loyal protective every one my vote goes with the germen rott hands down in my opinion there is no contest .

Don't have one yet, but Belgian Malinois [mal-in-waa] nicknamed 'the Ferrari of dogs'. Have proved to be a better working dog, and service animal than labs and shepherds. Malinois are a spin from Shepherds. Just slightly smaller, but much more obediant. They'd have my vote.

I’m planning on eventually getting a Native American Dog. They were used for hunting everything from rabbits to moose by the natives and were even trained to fish. They also escorted and protected the women and children when they’d go pick berries and helped transport there belongings when they traveled. They are suppose to be really good with children and they are hypoallergenic so a lot of people with allergies can still own one. I always feel much safer if I have a dog when I’m camping or in the woods. I love the wolfy look that they have, they even go in heat only once a year like wolves but they don’t have wolf in them. I also like that they are suppose to be really smart and have a high attention span, not yippy and overly hyped up like some other breeds.

Many settlers when moving west had these little terrier dogs. They looked just like pit bulls but much smaller than pit bulls of today.

I like those Australian shephard dogs.

I have a shepherd Wolf mix that is my constant companion but if I were to pick a all around wods dog it would be a large airdale I hade on when I first got here in WV he was shot at my feet by some one who never came out to revile hisself. This dog was a real crakerjack about 80 lbs and full of energy and could absolutly take care of hiself.

I have a Pug and a Bischon Frise. I would count the Great Dane but she's old and has one foot in the grave and another on a banana peel. Obviously I won't be bugging out.........but I am stocking up on dog food :D

OwlChild, I never herd of that breed. The one picture looks like a husky. How are they in the bush? Are they constantly gone like huskies?

Hop.. I would love to hear it story . I lost my friend a few years ago and have not gotten a dog scene he was a cockapoo half cocker and half poodle and all stud about 60 lbs. Now my mother has a cocker , That little girl is way too smart . I should get another pup so the little one can help raise my pup up right . Have you ever taken note that if you have a good older dog the pups will not be as hard to train the old dog will help do it , but if you have a bad old dog then you will have a bad pup

I have never owned one (though I would like to eventually) so all I know is what ive heard. From what I understand most are less hyper then huskies but you can find all that out on the breeders page I think.

I've got a Black Lab mix. Her momma had papers, her daddy was a "traveling salesman". Got her cheap. She will retrieve anything, and is especially fond of tennis balls. One time, I was afraid she was going to die because she was retrieving for so long. Oh, she can eat corn off the cob. It's quite a funny thing to see!

Although I didn't witness it(back when she was about 6 months old), my neighbor who lived below us in the duplex told us she was being dive bombed by blue jays one day and managed to catch one in the air. Apparently, it made a nice snack for her. She's getting older now, and will be 11 soon. Need to think about getting another one.

Why is it that dogs can create so many good memories? Too bad they don't live longer.

My dog is pictured in my avatar.
