I have an old .22 German made revolver that I am replacing. The old gun isn't safe and needs to be destroyed. I was wondering what barrels are typically made of as I thought it might be fun to forge a knife from the barrel? Any clues?

CS - I would think that would be dependent upon the year the gun was made don't you think?

typically gun barrels are not made from carbon steel. maybe not necessarily mild steel. I have heard of tomahawks made from octagon barrels.

There are a few issues with the gun. I got it cheap cheap because the owner had been fanning it and it was not functional. Upon disassembly I found the trigger finger broken off and the hammer gear was severly warn. I welded up both adding material and cut "new" parts. The rato of the acton dicates the timing at which the cylinder rotates. I made a spring for the cylinder to lock in place from a peice of band strapping. It is working but I couldn't feel good about handing to a friend to shoot and I can't feel good about relying on it in the woods. The frame is pot metal and is prone to breaking. Overall it is junk. You got me thinking though looks like I found the parts I need and could even get the maqnum cylinder here.

I guess I could fix it right for 100$. Is it worth it? What do ya'll think?

If it is worth more than it will cost to fix it and what you got in it, then yes. If it is not, then no.

Here is a pic of the gun. It does make a good tackle box gun. I may just go ahead and fix it. For $100 bucks it goes bang and is an accurate gun, just needs to be safe. I spray painted the frame and barrel olive drab. But if I do it again, I'll use duplicolor bed coating.

Same here. You couldn't really by another functioning .22 revolver for $100.

Yeah, I guess I'd triple that thought. I have a .32 H&R that's the biggest pain in the keester I've ever owned with a trigger pull nearing 300 lbs. but I still hang on to it. It's just hard for me to see any weapon destroyed.

I think I would rebuild it

Yeah I didn't really think it was repairable when I started the post. But it would seem the new parts would do it, the 100$ includes a "new" magnum cylinder. I'll try and order the parts. For a pot metal .22 LR it is really accurate.

Somewhere on here there is an old post where the frame broke on a similar .22 pistol.
