I picked up a two person crosscut saw today. I wasn't looking for one. It's an old Atkins No. 540. I don't think it's ever been used. The teeth don't show any signs of being sharpened. It's 5.5 feet long. I paid $75 for it. Here's a picture: http://http://i248.photobucket.com/albums/gg168/apache_33_2007/photo-18.jpg

So, I get home and start researching cross cut saws... http://www.motherearthnews.com/Modern-Homesteading/1979-09-01/The-Crosscut-Saw.aspx and particularly the Atkins saws, http://www.wkfinetools.com/hUS-saws/Atkins/history/HIST3-ecAtkins.asp. I find out that mine is more of a bucking saw. I didn't know there were both felling and bucking saws. I learned a little and, I think I got a pretty good deal. Here's a youtube video of one in action: http://montanacrosscuts.com/products/atkins51saw.html <-- did you see how much they want for that one?

my father has probably 60 of these hanging all over the walls of his wood shop, they're pretty neat

Great saw. Got anybody willing to test drive it with you?

Be happy to. I love these type of saws. Saves on gym membership too.

I went over to my aunt's a couple of weeks ago, she needed an old birch tree that had fallen over moved out of sight, couldn't find the my uncles chain saw, did find a saw just like yours and cut it up in just a few minutes. I don't imagine the saw had been used in 20 years from what she said. I just wish I hadn't eaten quite so much lobster stew before hand.

Lobster stew will make you spew if cutting trees is what you do. In other words, too much bisque is quite the risk when an antique saw is used too brisk.

That was a nice find....Something i keep my eyes peeled for when out on a "treasure hunt'.

Good to have 'alternate method" tools around. You know JIC?

I'm gonna have to do some more research on a few that I picked up, so thanks for the links....

An old time remedy and another helpful bit of information that I picked up was, if your saw gums up while sawing, you can add a little kerosen to the blade.

Here's a good informative read from the forest service, http://www.theaxehole.com/saws_that_sing_usda_catalog.pdf

Great find! I have had for many years, a Disston Champion 4' bucking saw. That baby makes short work of firewood for camp, in a wilderness area where a chain saw can not be used.

Great Find !! Just a friendly reminder to you and your volunteer... They were called "misery whips" for a reason...lol

Have fun with it !!
