I started out using what I called a temporary forge that was basically some fire bricks and propane torches. That worked just fine for some steels. Using a heat treat oven allows me to use a wide variety of steels and be more precise in the heat treat process. The end product (hopefully) will have more consistent results.

This is the heat treat process I used on the DOC Auction Knife Build Off knife that I am working on.

Nice little oven. What did that set ya back?

I picked up the oven and a bunch of other equipment and supplies a while back for a Ruger and two Smith & Wessons.

This forum is what got me interested in attempting to make knives. So far it seems to be taking. You really don't need much equipment to make a knife. Please note though that it can be addicting and once hooked, all bets are off on the equipment thing. When I first started I watched a bunch of videos and asked a lot of questions (still watching and asking). Here are a few videos that I found very useful http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/showthread.php?14382-Knife-Making-By-Green-Pete&highlight=Green+Pete While I don't make knives this way, it did give me a lot of ideas.

Looks like the YouTube user took them down. I guess you'll have to find your own inspiration.
