i got 8 people in my home, so we got plenty of transport. But for me i would go with my 2000 f250 with the 7.3 liter diesel in it.

Why choose this monster? lol i bought the truck a couple months ago with 188000 miles on it. She was a one owner family/farm truck kept in GREAT shape. Last owner spent over 9000$ on an engine, turbo and converter rebuild plus a 4 inch welded stainless exhaust and other goodies. I got the truck for 15000$. She may only get 13 miles to the gallon but she outpulls many larger vehicles and i was stuck inside of her in a snow storm for almost 10 hours straight. She kept me warm and the radio worked (so i was entertained). !0 hours in a snow storm...1/8 tank of fuel used and never turned her off and she never froze to the ground like other vehicles did around me. She is also 4x4 with a short box. She is solid as can be and i love my truck.

Next is the '98 jeep tj sahara edition. 4x4. 4.0 inline 6. solid vehicle but again only 16 mpg ish. She is quick and nimble. bit chilly when the temp gets below 0 though.

Got 3 motorcycles if i need to scout alone and quickly. my 09' victory kingpin is of course my baby.

With these 3 vehicles i can cover whatever i need to do. whether hookup to a house and drag it off its foundation, do a little scouting alone or scout/move with friends along.

It's always good to have a vehicle and a plan.

With the diesel you can also burn Jet A-1 fuel in it.

And fuel oil, cooking oil, ....caution may void your warranty......

with 99% of the vehicles on the road running normal gas i am sure diesel wil be more readily available.

Access to fuel will probably not be the problem. Most stations have the fuel and no electricity to pump it. I think after Katrina some laws were passed in the south (don't remember where) about gas stations having emergency generators but I don't remember the specifics of it. You might want to plan on alternate ways to refuel.

Florida passed those laws before Katrina and following the 2004 hurricane season. There were 4 storms that year and the roads were a mess with cars and no fuel while there was still plenty of gas to be pumped. I do think however that many Floridians have a sense - gas will be there - they have generators. Now that they have power, the gas will not last as long as people think when re-supply is interrupted.

i know how to get fuel out of the tanks with no power =)

Getting fuel out of the tanks isn't the problem. The big burly guy with the shotgun is generally the problem. He paid for all that fuel and isn't all the friendly about giving it away.

I just sold mine and somewhat regret it, I got a 1993 ZJ Jeep GC to replace it. More storage /carrying capacity, Not quite as nimble. Both were/are the 4.0 I6, these engines run forever some are reported over 300,000 miles and still going strong. Most are over 250,000 miles without any problems.

My BOV for now is my 1999 freightlinner classic 72" sleeper condo, 12 L Detroit and thirteen speed, my moose bar will clear the path, and on my next set of tires adding the commercial version of the green tire slime. Used in land fill and scrap yards, I watched the sales man puncture a tire repeatedly for 2 hrs with a punch (1/2 inch hole) and the hole plugged within 1-2 secs. Onboard air supply for air tools. It has 280 (235 usable) gal fuel cap. it gets 7 mpg loaded gross #80,000 so I figure at least double the 1600 loaded mile range bobtail, and if the need arises 1gal/hr at idle. Inside: double bunks, fridge, microwave, coffee pot, propane stove (window vents), satellite radio, CB, and plenty of blankets. Along with my F.O.R.D bags (F#$% Our Ride Died) and the ability to drag something smaller to drive, I should be good. But that is also my daily ride, 290 days a year. If I get somewhere remote enough and suitable enough I can live out of it like a cabin.

I own a 2006 Ford F350 Diseal Crew cab 4x4, and it wouldnt be on my list as my BOV...I also have a 2004 Silverado 1500 4x4 with a topper that I might call a BOV....but most likely I would either go with my 1996 Toyota 4runner, or my 1994 Toyota Pick-up (both 4x4)...or depending on conditions I might go with the snowmobile, or ATV.....or my favorite the sled dog team. Heck, I might just choose to walk....I dont like being a slave to vehilces

I have an '03 Chevy crewcab. It's all I have to work with other than the wife's grocery hauling mini van. Fuel economy is a drag, but it will go just about anywhere.

Thats what snowshoes are for. I haven't seen snow like that in southern CA, but there were winters in Michigan UP where I grew up that got pretty nasty.

Sometimes I think an ATV or UTV with a trailer would probably be better than any car or truck. I have an Arctic cat 4x4 ATV and a trailer for it, and it will go across fields shallow creeks and down ditches with ease. It has a heavy duty electric wench that will pull it out of just about anything. I figure 4, 5 gallon cans of gas in the trailer, and all of my survival stuff, and I could at least get to southern Ohio. Might take 2 or 3 days on the backroads but it would beat not making it at all!

I have an 08 f350 and an 84 cj7 with a 4" lift, but my BOV is my 1992 F350 crew 4x4 with the 7.3 idi. It has enough room for the family plus dogs in the cab, a canoe/kayak rack, a 12000# winch, a CB and will run on vegetable oil, used motor oil, trans fluid, hydraulic fluid, mineral oil - you know what they use to cool all those transformers dont you ;), diesel, etc. It gets in the mid teens mpg and is very reliable. It also does not have a computer controlling the engine or the transmission or a turbo to give probs. I can put one of the ATV's in the back and be ready to roll in less than 30 minutes.
Oh, yeah this is my first post, but I have been lurking for a while. It is nice to finally be legit.

My dads truck is a 94 f-350 with the 7.3 idi, 4 door with a long bed, ranch hand bumper, steel running boards welded on the frame, and a steel pipe rear bumper. I watched him drive through a 4' snow drift about 60 yards long one time, he got about halfway through it and couldn't figure out why it wasn't pushing through like it should of, then he realized his 4 wheel drive hadn't locked in. After backing up real quick and getting the 4x4 locked in it drove through like it wasn't there. We have since swapped out the auto locking hubs for some warn manual lock hubs.
