Paid SAR?

Anybody ever hear of paid positions in Search and Rescue? (other than being a county deputy, fireman or ambulance driver?).

I know that in Canuckistan the armed forces are often given those duties and in various provinces the Conservation offices. That's why I'm so adamant on keeping my wilderness survival skills honed, if I'm trusting my fate to either of those organizations I'm doomed.
