I am looking to buy a new(old) truck soon, and am thinking about an early Dodge Cummins 4x4. I am told that the earlier ones have no computer or any of that crap on them. I'd love some pointers on best years to look for/watch out for from somebody in the know.

Thanks in advance

If I were you, I'd go search for a dodge truck forum. Those guys will know the truck inside and out for the most part and will be able to provide you with more information than probably anyone here.

The older 12 valve only have three wires to make the truck run. You can run pretty much anything in them to get down the road, tranny fluid, veggie oil, etc. (there are precautions you have to take) Like any vehicle each generation has their quirks. 12 valves have the killer dowel pin, fifth gear nut falls off,. 24 valve second gens, bad trannys, bad vp pumps, electrical noise gremlins. Third gens 03-04.5 bad CP pumps, 04.5-07? too much inline presssure and blow the injectors. Anyways I won't go into details but check out moparman73 forum http://forum.mopar1973man.com/
or cummins forum. http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/

You'll have days of reading entertainment.
