I finally got out for some ice fishing. We were after pike and fishing a new unknown lake. I made a new hobo stove and got a chance to try that out, as well as an open fire on ice.

This was the first time I'd made fire on ice in over 30 years, since I was in the cub scouts. I actually made the fire in a 1" deep puddle of water that was formed by the heat of the hobo stove. It worked quite well.

For the stove, I simply cut an opening in the front to feed in wood, it wasn't nearly as windproof or efficient as the other stove I made which had 3 rows of small holes evenly spaced around the bottom, but, I could feed larger pieces of wood and not kill the flame. I had to set the stove on two pieces of wood as it quickly started to sink through the ice. For a small fire and considering the higher winds on the open lake it put out pretty good heat and melted all the snow and ice in a 3-4' diameter circle.

As far as the fish, you'll just have to watch the vid. hehehe! I do give a good rundown of my preferred ice fishing gear for pike.

Thanks, I've been out a few times now and although we're catching "some" fish, the pike seem to be running on the small side, lotsa hammer handles. I planned on another contest this past weekend, but was too busy with other things to attend.

Contest three weks back: Caught one hammer handle first thing and this. We camped overnight on the ice.

It is worth the work as long as you love what you are doing.
