CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) -- Yet another crisis is upon this burdened city, among the most impoverished and crime-ridden in the country.

Deep layoffs of city workers go into effect on Tuesday -- cutting up to 383 jobs, or one-fourth of the city's employees.

The exact number depends on whether public workers' unions make last-minute concessions. In any case, the cuts are likely to be deep -- and could be a blow to the quality of life in a city where more than half the 80,000 residents, mostly black and Hispanic, live in poverty.

Worst case, the layoffs could slash half the police force and one-third of the fire department for this city just across the Delaware River from Philadelphia. Practically every other job in the city is likely to be affected.

I guess we'll see how quickly or not so quickly, neighborhood watch programs pop up and are/arent effective.

Munis aren't to blame for Camden. They've been in the dumper for decades. The state took over their finances in 2000 because they were bankrupt back then. When three of your mayors go to jail over racketeering and corruption there's something rotten at the apple's core.

Corruption is the root of the problem there. They steal from the public trough constantly, and without even trying to hide it. Never fear though, the Guardien Angels will be patrolling the streets of Camden NJ :). The crime is so rampant and gangs. The "cop killer" that killed a Lakewood Policeman execution style on Friday was captured in Camden (I believe yesterday). The city deserves to be where it is today, they do nothing to fix the problems. It is unfortunate for the good people of the city, but they have had their chance for many years to try to fix it.

excerpt from most recent Mayor convicted of corruption:

CAMDEN, N.J. _ For the crimes he committed against the 79,000 residents of this impoverished city, former Camden Mayor Milton Milan, who was convicted in December on 14 counts of corruption, was sentenced Friday to seven years and three months in federal prison.

Just before he was sentenced, Milan, for the first time, acknowledged his guilt and apologized to the citizens of Camden and to his family.

"Though I might have started something good in the community to get to a position where people believed in me and trusted me, I let them down," he said, his voice cracking. "I'm sorry to my family and to my children."

That place was a toilet, that you wanted to stay away from, when I was driving trucks back in the late 80's.

And it still is. Has a great aquarium , the battleship New Jersey museum and the denizens do everything possible to destroy anything that is nice.

The nation's second high crime riddled city cuts its police force by half. "We're still going to protect our residents". Amazing.

Like Margarette Thatcher so wisely said, "The trouble with Socialism is that you run out of other people's money." If half the jobs in the town are for the municipality then their own taxes pay their own salaries and THAT is unsustainable, if only because wages have to be more than taxes or people will not work. People need to vote with their feet more. Last one out of Camden, turn off the lights.

Unfortunately they can't turn out the lights, they have been broken or stolen, such a shame

This is what happened in Newark NJ when they layed off police in Nov 2010:

Date of this article is December 9th, 2010

"Newark laid off 167 officers — the largest reduction in its force in 32 years — on Nov. 30. In the past week, there have been five homicides, 11 shootings and six carjackings throughout Essex County, most of them in Newark."

All the bad guys from Camden probably moved to Newark. Now that their streets are clear of the red and blue they can move back.

Sounds like a normal weekend in Cincinnati and they still have a full force at work!

The answer is simple:
Fire all ther cops
Fire all the firemen
Quit picking up the garbage
Do not call in outside help when the garbage catches fire
Bulldoze the smoldering remains
Let the scum that escaped the fire find other places to have their welfare checks mailed

Problem solved.

Cities have risen and fallen since history began. Some were distroyed by fire, famine or war and some fell into disuse due to shifts in trade or finances. No one owes a city immortality.

You've obviously never been to Spudville. If you lived there you'd owe it everything.
