View Full Version : Why do you go out into the woods?

People on the forum seem to be doing quite a variety of things in the outdoors, but I kind of wonder if the actual reasons for going into the woods might not be similar...
So what is it that you like so much about being out there?
What's the longest stay or trip into the backcountry you've had, and if you could, for how long would you like to go ideally?

To sharpen the saw. To practice new skills I've either read about or otherwise researched. To enjoy nature and just spend some quality time. Quiet time (that might be a shocker to you). I only do a couple of days at a time. I think a week would be about my limit. I have other things I love to do, too.

To kill animals and make a cup of tea.

To get away from people, work, and civilization. I could stay out indefinitely if the rest of my life wasn't so revolved around money and work. Even taking a weekend here and there makes it so much easier to go on the tedious work I do (programming... not fun let me tell you... think Office Space). Winter is the toughest for me since I really do hate winter camping/surviving, though in the spring/summer/fall I get out at least every other weekend.

They draw me to them, I don't really know why. The smell of leaves or the feel & sound of the wind blowing through the trees or the ripples it forms on a pond or lake. A fish jumping, a squirrel chattering, or the birds chirping. Then all is right in the world. This is my world.

Get tired of plastic. Like dealing basics; where will I sleep, what will I eat, can I get over the portage and into the next lake before night falls, etc.

There is also the spiritual aspect. Too many things coming at me in civilization - keeps me from thinking deep thoughts.

I like the real world - unlike this box. Virtual reality? Rather go for the real thing.

Because it's good to be reminded of what's really important. For me, being in the woods is real life. The rest is just filler.

Ever since I was a kid I've always liked wild places. Now I work part time as a wildlife research assistant and part time as a survival instructor. both jobs require a lot of time in the wilds.

Then come vacations with my wife. Strangely enough most of our vacations seem to be in jungles and national parks. I guess we just like the wilderness.

I've loved the bush all my life.Freedom, peace & quiet. It's where I'm happiest & where I feel the most alive.Went so far as to build a cabin & spend as much time there as possible.Would stay there forever if $$$ would allow.

Cuz today's the day the teddy bears are having their picnic...what no one else remembers the song?

Seriously though, it's been said here already, it's where I belong (and if I want to have tea with Frank, it's where I have to go to find him, I'll just follow the path of carcasses :D).

The wilderness accepts me without judgement. It does not care that I am fat, ugly, lazy, balding, old, half a' boubble off.....The wilderness is the place to get out of my mind; I do not judge the wilderness as I wander through it; I do not see a tree as defective, because it is bent, twisted or some limbs are broke. It is that, and it is perfect; It is what it is. The whole is perfect, and the parts are perfect.

I feel like a child at Disneyland, there is so much to see, that the eyes race from wonder to wonder. Drawn now here, and now wandering toward, what is that over there.

I am the mirror that the wilderness is reflected on; And the wilderness is the mirror that I am reflected on. And so we are "ONE".

There is only what is, and what is, is the pure bliss of being "ALIVE".........

Even better hopeak, the wilderness does not judge us because we are not perfect. It accepts us in the way we are,it does not care about our past.

I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in. John of the Mountains:The Unpublished Journals of John Muir, 1938

And like so many have posted ahead of me......it's the feeling of going home. The smell of the woods after a light rain, if bottled, would be priceless..

I was out in the woods today, chasing bunnies with a slingshot. Think I met up with Bugs, killing a rabbit with a slingshot, yeh right, LOL.

And I'm a good shot with the slingshot.
