View Full Version : Forum Upgrade

Chris

I have decided to upgrade the forum. I will probably start later today, this is going to be a big deal, it is a major upgrade, so it will take a little time.

When the forums go offline, it will only be temporary, but then when they come back up, they'll look entirely different. It will take me some time to get the design back to how it is now.

Thanks for the heads-up. As far as upgrade --- start with Rick and C:boxer:rash!!!!

Great. Blizzard coming. Forum down. :tabletalk: I can already feel the withdrawal symptoms.

Will Rick still be here when the upgrade is finished?

Rick needs a full re-programing, the re-booted, about 20 re-boots should solve the problem.

okay, the upgrade is done... but it will take me a few days to piece the color scheme back together. IT uses a whole new (And unintuitive system).

There are a lot of new features, the two biggest ones will be the facebook integration, and the user profile customizations. But you'll notice a lot of new things.

Ken
01-11-2011, 05:56 PM
This is like getting a new toy. Thanks, Chris!

01-11-2011, 06:07 PM
Can you explain more about the Facebook integration? What is that?

Chris
01-11-2011, 06:13 PM
If you are a facebook member you can connect your forum account to your facebook account and post on your wall when you post a new thread here, letting your friends know about your new thread.

Then there are also generic facebook "like" buttons all over.

It is all entirely optional.

RangerXanatos
01-11-2011, 06:20 PM
Sounds very interesting. I bet if the ones that have a facebook, integrated when they posted a new topic, this site would get a lot more hits and new members joining!

I thought I had shown the color change hours ago, but I guess it was just for me, not everyone else.

So yes, I've made it this far on the colors, more tweaking is required. It is very very tedious, the colors. This new version doesn't have a good tool to control them like the old version. I basically get a list of a couple hundred variables and I get to play trial and error to see what controls what.

The coloras to my eye are perfect, too bad that you could not re-boot rick.

Chris
01-11-2011, 10:53 PM
well it isn't perfect... like the

Post Quick Reply button just below the quick reply box... white text on a colored box with a white gradient top... hard to read.

Then the pagination...t his is where it gets stupid. I can set pagination background, and pagination font color. So I use the green background, and the white font color, it works... except for the part that actually says "Page 3 of 3" it only uses the font color setting, making it white on beige right now, hard to read.

That is a bug (imo) in the software though.

Little things like that I'm going to have to go through and hunt down.

your_comforting_company
01-11-2011, 11:00 PM
Can we use the pictures of actual buckets of dirt as the background?

Chris
01-11-2011, 11:02 PM
Okay... the smaller text menu in the navbar, the first link is now "Today's Posts" instead of "New Posts" since "New Posts" was redundant with the big "What's New" button above.

crashdive123

Chris - now that you've added the wall paper, the green font just below the nav bar is obscured. I know it highlights it in a white box when the cursor is put over it, but if you don't already know it's there you may not find it.

Maybe it's just my monitor, but everything is now easier to read for me. The "dead space" between the body of a post and the signature line is bigger, and it appears that the avatar is larger than before to me. I used to enlarge my display to 125% to make it easier to read and now it's at 100% and easier to read than before. Makes me feel younger.:stuart:

I logged in first thing this morning for the first time. Good job Chris. When I went to reply to this thread, it made me log in again...

Also, there are some words in green that you have to highlight over to see at the top, like FAQs. Didn't know if you were aware or not.

Anyway, thanks for making things better!

*edit* - Looks like the words being obscured by the background occurred when I was not logged in.

I like this Chris!!! Prefer it to the original and most definitely prefer it to blue and white.
Having worked on web site design before, I know that you've got to try a lot of different things to actually see what works.
What looks good on paper doesn't necessarily transfer on screen. You've solved the big stuff. The small stuff is just a matter of tweaking the nuances.

Avatars have file size limits. In addition to dimensional limits.

You may need to save them in a different file format, or otherwise optimize their size, to fit a large one in.

This is done so that pages don't load too slowly with all the larger image files (a single avatar can take as long to load as all the actual text content on the page).

I think it is 40 or 45kb.

The blurriness on mine is your mind playing tricks on you.

Avatars should not be stretched to 200x200 if the native image is smaller. I personally have not changed my image size, so it is still small, and the exact same as it has always been.

Still there seems to be a "Halo" of white around the hat that I don't recall being there before.... OTOH I am able to use some really neat avatars now that I couldn't before, due to loss of Detail. So THANKS Chris! I may play some more with my avatars though just to see what the limits are with the ones I have. When the forums go offline, it will only be temporary, but then when they come back up, they'll look entirely different. It will take me some time to get the design back to how it is now.

It might be helpful if you explain exactly what it is that you hate. If it's function, we may be able to help you with it. If it's form, then it might be something that Chris can address. If it's software, then there is probably not a lot that can be done.

the "go to first new post", doesn't take me to the right place. sometimes it's the first post in the thread, and sometimes it's the top of the most recent page.

Form is extremely subjective. It's the bane of my professional existence.

Rick
01-13-2011, 10:28 AM
YCC - It may be dependent on where you are. If you ask for the first new post inside a thread then it may take you to the first new post inside that thread. If you are on the forum and ask for it it may be returning the first new post in any thread (whichever is newest). I can't seem to find the button in my view so test that and see if that's what is happening.

EDIT: I think that's what's happening. It's dependent on where you are. Let us know if something different is happening to you.

I gotta get new eyes. Stuff is getting harder and harder to see.....sheesh!

Ok.. so, if I click "What's New?" at the top, it returns a list of recent posts. If I click the little blue arrows beside "Mysterious Winter Fire" (hovering over the arrow says "go to first unread post") it goes to post #1. The old version would put the most recent post at the top of the page, rather than going to post 1. For me, It would have been post #12.
Hope that makes sense..

Not on my screen,I only see it if I am in a thread,or on the whose online page!

Go to the very top. In the brown bar. The last option is Quick Links. At least in my view. It's not as robust as the one on the View Who's Online Page.

I'm wishing the quick links button showed up on each page, not just when you are in a thread,or on the who'se online page...

The quicklinks button in the navbar is on every page

I have the same problems as the others.
1)"Go to 1st unread post" only takes me to the top of the most current page.
2) "Quicklinks" only appears on a thread or "Who's Online"
Included are a couple of Screen shots so you can see.

the unread post thing seems to be a bug in the software, that is beyond my ability to troubleshoot, but the little blue arrows work.

Weird... I was just going to say that if you needed any screenshots I could do those to help out. However , I see I have encountered another quirk.... The same things I quoted in the last post also show in this post when I hit "Reply to thread". Except for yours....

to cut down on unnecessary images on the homepage.

Now the icon for a forum with new posts is a campfire, and the icon for a forum without new posts is nothing. I like this look much better.

Hey there. Rock here (actually it's Crash). This is actually a screen name that was created so that we could look at deifferences between what Admin/Mods see vs members. I see no difference in the quick links drop down when I am logged on here or as Crash. Not sure what is causing Nell and B to not see it.

I believe what you're seeing is normal.

On all pages you see the quicklinks at the top, BUT if you're on a "new posts page" be it the "Today's posts" or "Whats new" you open up a different menu for finding more new content. That is intended.

Is the "what's new" tab on the main page the "new posts" link?

Also, I get page not found when I click on the "subscribed threads" link.

The forum seems slow and at some times completely unresponsive. I figured this was just because you are still modigying things, but wanted to point it out in case it's something else.

I really liked the "userCP" and "new posts" links before. That's what most forums I visit have and seems pretty standard. That way I can easily see new responses to my subscribed threads and also see new posts easily without having to navigate through an array of buttons, tabs and links.

The look is much easier on the eyes than a few days ago.

Ken, I can get there either way. I don't know if you can or not. If you go to My Profile see if there is a small crayon to the right of your name. If there is, it should take you to your profile just like Settings. I'll log in as Rock after while and see what the view is.

Other than upping the screen resolution, is there a way to make the forum resize to fit the browser window?
This left to right scrolling is annoying especially when I have the browser window set so I can see part of my computer desktop.

Is there a minimum requirement for the browser being used?

Rick
01-15-2011, 02:14 PM
Yes. Hold the CTRL key down and use the wheel on your mouse to make it smaller. One click should fix it. Mine did the same thing. It will stay like that each time you log on, too.

2dumb2kwit
01-15-2011, 04:16 PM
Oh, well....huh?

If I hold "ctrl" and use the wheel it takes two clicks to make it fit. (90%)
At 90% (or even at 95%) there is the bar on the right, and the bar on the bottom, (that lets you scroll up-down, or slide left-right) in each individual post. (At the area of the text, being posted.)

LowKey
01-15-2011, 05:24 PM
Most web pages auto-resize when you change the browser window size, without making the text smaller.
You shouldn't have to click this or that.
I'm just wondering if this outdated computer isn't up to handling the new forum software, but it sounds like others have the same thing.

Rick
01-15-2011, 05:28 PM
I'm still not following you. Can't you size it down so the page is centered on the screen? The bar at the bottom will disappear.

LowKey
01-15-2011, 05:33 PM
Only by making the text impossible to read.
Go to any other website, grab the lower corner of your webbrowser window and resize it smaller. The web page will usually narrow up to accommodate you doing that (up to a point). This site does not do that.
It's set at fixed width.

Rick
01-15-2011, 05:39 PM
Ooooh. You're using Internet Explorer (yuck). That's why I'm not following. I use Firefox (big yeah).

LowKey
01-15-2011, 05:45 PM
I'm using Firefox.
But I'm also using a Mac.
And both are old cuz this home machine is an ooooold Mac.
I'll check at work on Monday to see if an updated system is needed.
If so, I get to scroll on this site, I guess. All other sites behave normally and resize with the browser window. I don't know enough about web programming to even be dangerous but I know this has something to do with a 'dynamic' setting versus a 'fixed width' setting somewhere.

That's what I was trying to 'splain to you. When the bar at the bottom dis-appears, it then is in every individual post. (And a bar on the side, is also in every post.)

Well, I'm sure you smart guys have noticed this, but every time I've seen the double words, it has been the last word of one line, and the first word of the next line.

Like....when you type, and get to the end of a line, while you are typing a word, it gets moved to the next line....'cept it forgets to remove that word from the first line.

Yeah.

Not for me. Just goes to the top of the page the new post is on.

I haven't figured out how to use the 'Qoute and Reply' thing either. It seems to want to post directly under the post I want to quote, not at the end of the thread?

Chris, When I hit the manage attachments button I get a page with an upper and lower section. The upper sectionshows some of the pictures on my computer. The lower section is empty. Drag the pictures that you want to appear in your post to the lower box then click "Done". I get that part. The proplem I'm having is that not all of my pictures appear to be accessible. In my case I get 12 pages of pictures with 20 pictures per page. There is also a column on the left with "Home" in it. When I select that, it takes me to the first of the twelve pages. The Pictures folder on my computer contains tens of thousands of pictures.

It might be helpful if you explain exactly what it is that you hate. If it's function, we may be able to help you with it. If it's form, then it might be something that Chris can address. If it's software, then there is probably not a lot that can be done.

Mainly, I just do not like the look of it. I don't like the way the buttons look, I don't like the cutesy comic-book speech bubbles around the quoted text. I like the way everything looked before. The way it looks to me now actually feels like older software. For my eyes, it just somehow feels... hard to read.
