Well, while I am waiting on some materials for the knives I have on order, I decided to heat treat and test a big knife I have been working on a little at a time. Its about 14-15" long and made out of 1/4" thick 1084 steel. I am waitinf on some mesquite scales big enough for the large handle. It still has the scale from the heat treat on it. I have whacked a few 2x4 with it and the edge holds up good. It is not really a chopper since there is no weight at the tip, but does bite into the wood. Hogs and zombies might have nightmares about this one.:scared: I will clean up the blade and add the scales when time permits. Whatcha think?

I would really love to see that with some scales and a guard. The blade itself is very pleasing to the eye and looks very durable.

I may try a guard on the next one, that sounds like a great idea. On this one I may just deepen the area where the index finger goes. But as is it feels really good. The steel is 1/4" at the handles so maybe 1/8" or 1/4" handle material is needed. Thanks guys!

i've lately been playing around with forged copper guards. not terribly practical, but fun to do.

I really do like the shape of that one. Looks like it would handle quite a few task. What is the weight like, and balance point.

What's not to like? That is going to be one handsome knife when you give it a shower and get it dressed up.

Right now with out the scales its balance point is right at the plunge line. That will change once the scales are added. I was going to taper the tang since it is 1/4" thick there. It is a little heavy, and with the 12 degree on each side of the edge it bites into wood and slices paper well. I left the edge thick before sharpening so it would have a more durable edge for hacking through wood. I might thin it out a bit and maybe, just maybe taper the tang. It is already heat treated so I don't want to mess with the tempering so well see how this goes.

I finally got around to putting on some mesquite handles on this big boy. I cleaned up the blade and then wrapped it in paper towel soaked in white vinegar for the antique look. I have been chopping 2x4's and logs left and right. My neighbors must think I am nuts. Hehehe...
