Here is another one of this type of knife. I just like having a bottle opener on these small guys. It is made from cpm154 and the scales are g10. Hope ya like it. I think it is big enough for everydaycarry and small enough for a BOB. Then again I am probably biased in my opinions. This one still needs the makers mark put on and a little cleaning up in the tonsil area. hehehe.... I added the hole before I ground the bevels and it didn't center between the plunge line and the handle, maybe nex time I will remember to measure twice and drill once.

That's pretty nice, Frank. I like it. Isn't that hole designed for cordage so you can tie it to a pole and make a spear? Isn't that what it's for? Yeah, I thought so. Let's call it a "cordage cleft". No one will know the difference.

I have a Tom Krien designed small neck knife called a ''Dogfish'' with a bottle opener very similar to that one. Comes in handy after a long day of fishing when the celebrating begins. Maybe it's my over active imagination but the bottle opener on your knife looks like a turtles head. I may be just nuts, I don't know. Good work. I like it ALOT.

After I drew this one up and was horrified when I saw the DogFish. I think mine was different enough not to be the same. Maybe Tortuga

wow man, you made that? Looks great. Making a knife is what actually made me stumble upon this site. I was looking to buy one, but was thinking about it and a blade is basically tempered steel. Well, being a carpenter I have leftover steel laying around (old saw blades and such) and figured that scrap is more than useful to learn on. I think I have all the tools as well, may just need to get a couple of files. Really, its the tempering that I need to learn (i've seen DIY's that don't temper and just sharpen old steel, but that is too easy for me, so all thats left is tempering)

One question; Scales, is that the handle of the knife? I know the tang is the part inside the handle, but I've seen the term scales a few times and assume that it means the material fashioned to hold the tang. Thanks.

Also, what stock do you use? I mean, I saw the cpm154 stainless, but do you buy stock or do you use scrap? If scrap, anything in particular that will give a nice blade without tempering to start with? A softer steel would probably be better for me to learn how to get an edge since its less work, but just what should I keep an eye out for?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm definitely a newb.

Here's a post you might want to look through. There are a couple of links at the bottom of it for sheath making and knife making. Yes, scales are the handles.

Beautiful, thanks so much. I'm new here (obviously) and still learning my way around here and what your site etiquette is.

And don't worry, you're not giving advice to some punk kid if you cared to know.
