I am wondering (and maybe it has been done) about cutting the handle off of a kukri with 1/4" or 5/16" thick blade, and installing new scales forward of the old. Maybe end up with a heavy 9" or 10" blade, with lots of belly.

I would think it to be a much more sturdy blade, but you might find the shortness restrictive. My uncle has a short bowie type knife that sees a lot of use, I'd guess it as a 10 or 12" blade (I don't know much about styles etc.) and it's great for hacking through limbs, but it's a little to short to just clear out twigs and branches.
I say give it a try and let us know how it works for YOU!

the idea sounds good, one thing about the kurkis or at least the ones I've seen is they have a stick tang. by moving the handle a fella can make it into a full tang handle which should be stronger. I noticed on the atlanta cutlery web site they have kurki blades for sale. wanted to add to that I have no financial interest in that company and haven't ever bought anything from them but I received a catalog from them.

Is your goal to have a heavy blade without the kukri curve in it, or just a shorter tool?

Shorter tool. I like the curve. If the BK-9 does not bring joy, then I might try this Gen II-SP53
tool.

Here's a Kukri that I have. Sounds like it is about the size you are looking for?

I use a Woodsman's Pal and love it. I regularly build blinds in the field for my wildlife photography work, and this tool is FAR superior to any machete or ax I've tried. I have also tried the larger knife concept (with poor results). If you are looking for a shorter machete with plenty of capability, consider the Woodsman's Pal. http://www.woodmanspal.com/index.html

I invest all my money in expensive whiskey, and cheap women. The rest I just waste on knives and firearms.

Humm!

I have never found a cheap woman.

Not even a reasonably inexpensive one.

Even a couple of the expensive ones lacked quality control and did not function as advertised.

I have learned to stick with guns, knives and good burbon. If I want variety I switch to Jack Daniels for a weekend.

What the hell is a good Bourbon? Is that like Jim Beam that you drink with your pinky finger extended? :wine:
