Some time back "Mac" (Pict) did a great thread on his survival kit attached to his Becker BK-7 knife sheath. Of course I could not find it on this forum (search function sucks on this forum) However I found it quickly on an other forum. It is a great thread. Now to the point: Has anyone else done this......? And can you share any lessons learned on creating a basic survival kit attached to a knife sheath.

Note: I think that thread of Mac's should be a sticky.

I've built two of the BK-11s using Mac's as a model. I built one for my wife and one for me. There really isn't much to share. The inner tubes do a great job holding everything in place. I built just about the same kit that Mac did with some really minor exceptions. I find it hangs a bit heavy on my neck but that might just be me. I don't wear enough to get comfortable with it. If I wore it everyday, like Mac does, it might feel better. Otherwise, Mac pretty much detailed it out. If you have specific questions, I'll try to answer.

Oh, one thing you need to consider is how the sheath will hang. You can set it up for left or right hand draw so be careful of that when you thread the neck cord through. Otherwise, you'll be drawing it with your weak hand. Sorry, I just thought of that. My wife's is set up right handed and mine is set up left handed.

I really need to find a knife and build me one of these. I have most all of the parts except the knife.

My necker works for me, with the magnesium rod. But the Firesteel makes it too heavy for my taste. I have the Becker BK-9 on order, and I am hoping to build a kit also around that sheath.

Rick.......Mac talks about a rubber wrap........what is he using..????

Here's Mac's thread by the way. You must not have been holding your mouth right. It's a lot like fishing.

The wrap is a bicycle inner tube. If you look closely at my pic you can see there are two pieces of inner tube. That let's you open one end at a time without loosing everything. You can roll up either end, too. Not my design, it's Macs.

Here's the fire steel I use. It's really small and works great. I don't use the steel, I use the knife for that.

I have never seen that. It's a good write up. I apologize, I thought you were talking about the neck knife. I'll go back to sleep now.

Thanks for getting this tread started and posting the link to the BK7 based kit. I had seen some knife sheaths with pouches and thought about building a kit from that, but this gives me even more ideas.

Here is the sheath that will accompany a trio of knives I am making for hard use in the piney woods and swamp for bushcraft and killing gators. http://www.texasknife.com/vcom/product_info.php?cPath=962&products_id=3257

it is also offered in a few differant colors and for 6"blade and less too. The one pictured is for 8" blades

I like it for the pouch that is on it so you can put a kit in there and have it with you at all times you have your knife.

My buddies in the sandbox like it too!

You know, I have that thing and it's laying in a drawer. That's just one of those times the customer and product didn't match. I still wonder why I bought it.
