This server was hacked into yesterday, they defaced the homepage of this site (and all the other sites on the server). You may not have noticed it, I dealt with it pretty quick.

When a server is compromised it is hard to guarantee security going forward since the hackers may have put in hidden back doors for future entry. The best solution is to move to a new server.

This, in the end, is a good thing. The server this site is on is 4 years old, and the way technology changes I can get a better and faster server for the same price per month, or even less. The one I'm looking at is 300% faster.

The only problem is that there will be a period, sometime in the next week, that the forum will be unavailable for a few hours to half a day (depending on your individual ISP), as the transition takes place. So, expect that.

Don't worry about any files or any saved data you may have on the site, everything will be moved, the site will be cloned 100%.

Will the new server allow enough bandwidth to embed video? just curious.

I think another forum recently had this same issue. I wonder what the purpose is for these attacks. Wilderness survival haters or what? Competition?

My computer got a virus/ malware after the last attack you mentioned and wondered if it was related as well.

They post links and insert pop up malware HTML code that redirects you to their site, mostly selling something, this increases the traffic to their sites and boosts the page ranking with the search engines,,,,,,,, among other things.. Sneaky SOB's !

No, you cannot embed video...but you can always upload to youtube and link to your videos.

the site will be cloned 100%.

As long as your going to be Cloning anyway, any chance you could clone some of the nice ladies on this forum..........:innocent::innocent::innocent:

So the server is setup and I've started transitioning sites to it.

I'm going to do other, smaller, sites first. To make sure there are no issues.

Assuming there are no issues I'll probably move this site soon, maybe tommorow morning.

If you want to expedite the move, once you view the forum and see the message saying the move is on, edit your Window's "hosts" file to include this:

174.133.229.73 www.wilderness-survival.net (http://www.wilderness-survival.net)
174.133.229.73 wilderness-survival.net

Thats a tab between the IP and the URL.

It should be in your Windows\system32\drivers\etc\ folder

If you think you'll want to do this, save or print this post, as once the change starts you won't be able to see it.

When editing the file your antivirus may give you a warning (since the file is often edited by viruses trying to make your google.com point to some porn site or something) ignore that.

You don't need to do this to make the site work again, it'll work again eventually, in a few hours for most, in a day for the unlucky, but this will speed it up.

have people noticed the response time is faster?

Being on cable it is usually very fast. The past couple of weeks I have noticed periodic slow downs. I have not noticed any since the move was completed - but can't say if it is because of the new server.

Cable here as well so hard to judge.

How about you dial up folks. Any improvement?

Well, the old F.A.R.T.S. have reported in. We are either way ahead of everyone else or way behind. It's hard to tell with us sometimes.

I use cable too but I can notice it, but maybe I'm more sensitive to such things. It is not necessarily the time it takes the page to load, but the time between when you click a link and when the next page starts to load.

Has it happened then? I didn't feel the earth move or anything.

Winnie

Just one thing , I think a few posts have disappeared into the ether on transfer.

Chris

Impossible, really. I shut the forum down on the old server. Then copied the database.

So, it would have been impossible to make a post to the old server that didn't get copied here.

A few posts definately disappeared somehow. Oldsoldier and RWC and I for sure lost posts in the "first cow tan" thread. I don't know what happened, but I know it did happen. I'm sure I didn't imagine it, did I RWC?

You didn't imagine it YCC, they definitely disappeared. I read them, replied to them, and read the replies to my replies, so they defifnitely disappeared. No biggee to me, I've had posts disappear, or be altered, and have had rep disappear before the server move as well.

Doing a search will time it for you, For example, I searched "server move"

Copy/paste
Showing results 1 to 7 of 7
Search took 0.06 seconds. Search: Key Word(s): server, move

(i never paid attention to this before the move however)

Or it may be the smudge marks on our reading glasses making things seem ,,, well different :)
