A couple of my friends went up to Canada bear hunting a few years back. They each got their bear and loaded them in the truck and headed home. When they got to the border the guards inspected the trophies.

"You Kentucky fellows are sure good shots! You plugged each one right between the eyes." one guard stated.

"Well thanks, we do our best." my friend replied.

"Just one thing," the guard added, "Why did you shoot the poor bears through both paws? That just seems cruel."

"No that is just part of the hunting system." my buddy explained, "When you shine the light in their eyes they through their paws over their face."

Good Luck Camp!

Well, like I should have guessed, I got rained on every day of the week! The wind was swirling and the rain was light for the most part but it would come and go all day long. If you look at the sky in the pics, these were taken over several days and the sky looks about the same.

I got some nice pictures, nearly hypothermic on Wednesday, and sent out a few hundred text messages. I didn’t see a single bear though. Oh well, it’s tough to hide your scent in a wind that changes all the time. I’m sure that even with the scent block system I used, they were able to pick up on me and leave. None of the hunters that were there with week did any better.

I bailed a day earlier than I planned because my gear was so wet and I need to spend the weekend getting it to dry and put it away.

Enjoy the pics!

These first two are where I spent the first 2 days. It was a recent cutting and looked very promising. It wasn’t.

This was the road into the first setup.

I watched this girl swim her way to the other side of the pond but by the time I got to where I could get a picture, she was out of the water. You’ve got to look hard to see her, it was a long reach for my camera!

These are the rest of the pics. Most of these are on the side of Moxie mountain.

Haven't heard of a lot of bear hunters having to much luck so far this season. It was way to warm the first week.

Very pretty area. Sorry to hear you didn't get a bear.
I have seen a number of bear this season (ours started in August). None long enough to get a shot. They are lower and in the berries more (berries were very late this year). They just don't stick around and are very skittish. Also most of the ones I have seen are a bit smaller than I normally see.

I have done fairly well with Birds (Grouse and Quail) this year though. Enough so that my Gout has acted up.

I feel your pain !! We got back last Saturday night with no success. There were too many acorns and too much corn where we were hunting. There were a few baits getting hit but they were hitting them in the middle of the night or super early in the morning. Only 50 weeks to go and we will be back up there ! LOL

I've talked to several bear hunters and guides and they all have the same story. It seems like the amount of natural foods in the woods this year are just to easy of a choice for an animal as smart as a bear.

Camp, did you see the article about the guy guiding for bear up near Rangeley, with dogs, and the bear tore him up enough he spent some time in the hospital. The guide thought some of the bites that he got were from the dogs. They did kill the bear, came in about 350 if I remember correctly.

Yeah, we were talking about that at work the other day. If the version I heard is true, he wounded it and went in after it to soon. I hadnt heard that some of the bites might have been from the dogs but I wouldnt be surprised... those dogs are pretty intense.

This time it will be for small game. I am heading up tomorrow morning to do a week of bird hunting. This has been an on and off tradition my brother and I have done for 15 years. It has evolved over the years as well. It used to ba a rabbit/grouse trip. Now it is a waterfowl/grouse trip.

I have the boat ready, the shotgun ready and the gazetteer here at the house marked out so Mrs Camp knows where to send rescue if I dont make it back...it gets me nervous when she asks for it like that.

I just need to stop by at work and fill my coolers with ice today and load up the truck! I'll try to get pictures. Have a great week all!

Well, I’m back! I’ve spent the past week enjoying being away from work and in the woods. I’ve taken plenty of pictures and will share a few of the trip. For the New Englanders here that might know the area, I spent the first three days on Debsconeag deadwater on a site called “Wheelbarrow pitch”. It is a great site just below the Debsconeag falls. The views are terrific and the duck hunting was okay…the majority of the ducks have gone already. We were able to get a few but didn’t take to many because all that are left are the divers (mostly mergansers) and I havnt found a way to make them tasty.

A picture perfect view of Mt Katahdin while motoring back up the deadwater to our site!

This might be the best picture I’ve ever taken!
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx21/hereisfine/100_0428.jpg

It was 26 degrees this morning out on the duck blind. This is just before sun up and this beaver just kept crossing in front of the decoys. I thought it made a nice picture, but it didn’t come out as well as I would have liked.
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx21/hereisfine/100_0437.jpg

The rest of the week was spent up the Telos rd on a small pond called thistle pond. It was a very nice are and the grouse hunting (their called partridge up here) was incredible! I only have this one picture of these two. We found worms in them after keeping them whole for a few hours so we just breasted out the rest as we took them. We didn’t see anymore signs of worms.

Yeah, I should have shaved and put on something nice….I hadnt seen a person (other than my brother) in 5 days at this point and didn’t care!
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx21/hereisfine/100_0443.jpg

This is probably the best part about the state of Maine! These signs are everywhere around paper company property, and that is about half the state!
http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx21/hereisfine/100_0449.jpg

Perhaps it was the beer, but this picture just looked cool when I took it!

LL Beans in the field.

Yup, I like these bean boots! I wear the 10" as long as it is dry and swap them to these 16" until the snow falls. These boots do get cold in the snow.

I've been enjoying posting these trip pics, I've done this trip for 16 years now but this is really the first time a camera went with me.

Man....that looks like a great time. I'm jealous! Around here, it's hard to find any land to enjoy. Most of the huntable land around here, is leased to hunt clubs. I wouldn't mind joining a hunt club, but all the ones that I know of, think that hunting means sitting in the truck, trying to stay ahead of 25 to 50 dogs running. That's not my thing.

I'll be heading out tonight for a 2 week, 3 state grand finale of my season. So far, I only have a doe in the freezer from extended archery and a few grouse. This season hasnt been as successful as last year but I havnt had the time either.

The camera is packed and I hope to have some pics in a few weeks to share!

Oh, just in case Y2K comes back...I'm bringing my lefty bolt 7mm-08 Browning and several custom hunting knives! Lol! One knife for me, the other 3 are thank you gifts for hunting partners and land owners.

Rick

I sure hope those are serrated knives so you can slice the rope in one swipe while being dragged down the road by your ankle.

Have fun, stay safe.

A week in Pa! I really look forward to this week. Here are some pictures of the area where I was hunting. I enjoy hunting the open woods that are down in this area and spend my days watching the big grey squirrels and other wildlife that are in the area. I watched a bear walk within 20 yards of my treestand on Friday but wasnt able to get a camera out to catch him. They move so smooth and quiet through the woods for such a big animal! Anyways, enjoy the pictures.

I was able to get two deer. One the first evening and one the last. Both are about 100 lbs, not that big but better than nothing.

http://i738.photobucket.com/albums/xx21/hereisfine/100_0499.jpg

I didnt get a picture of the other in PA, so here is the inside of my very messy (hey, I just got back!) garage.
