View Full Version : Knife Making Score

I was introduced to a gentleman this evening that had quit making knives. I'm not sure why, neither was he. Anyway - I went with the anticipation of getting a Burr King Grinder. Well, out of all of the equipment in his shop, that was the one thing he was keeping. We may work something out in the future, but since I have a grinder - I'm OK for now.

Now for the score. We did this via barter (my favorite way to do business). I'll take some pictures tomorrow of exactly what I got, but here's a partial list....

Digital heat treating oven
Roll of stainless steel foil
Aluminum beams
Personalizer
Stencil material
Etching material
small oxy/acetelyn rig
brass, bronze, nickle silver pins and tubes
about 40 pounds of brass and bronze
aluminum
titanium
D2
A2
various stainless steels
handle materials

I'm probably forgetting a few things. I'll take an inventory and pictures tomorrow.

I was pretty pleased. He knew I was on a budget. He valued everything at $1150. I traded three handguns (SW9F, SW40V and Ruger P89). The guy helping load the truck that has been making knives a long time said - "You understand that the titanium and other metals are worth well over $1000 don't you?" I told him I did now. I'm tinking titanium dive knives might be in order.

It will feel odd not making a knife from a rusty saw blade or a rusty file.

Bah, when making knives out of junk the end result is always an improvement.

Those burls are sick.

What are they?

He wasn't sure (told me to make something up). The handle material that he had was amazing. He had large amounts stabalized giraffe leg bone, petrified mastadon, horns, antlers, and on, and on. Some of the stuff he had goes for about $100 an inch on todays market. I'm begining to understand more and more why some knives cost so much.

stabalized giraffe leg bone

It's not right to just take the leg bone and let them go. That's wrong.

Rick - They only use the front legs for knives. The back legs are reserved for shoes.

you 2 guys set that up for the photo of the gorilla, right?

Crash, what do you use the aluminum beams for?
And have you ever tried Cor-Ten steel? or are it's properties not good for knives.

I don't make knives. Just curious.

crashdive123
08-28-2010, 08:45 PM
I have not tried (or really know anything about) that type of steel. The aluminum beams - I guess they're really large peices of aluminum angle are used to air quench steel. Steels that are air quenched are heated inside a stainless steel foil envelope (made individualy from a roll of it). When removed from the oven they are clamped int the aluminum, which cools (quenches) it very quickly and keeps it from warpping.

We use aluminum in the shop for a lot of the structural framing we build. I just didn't know how it could be used for knife-making being as soft as it is.
Thanks.

I've got a Grizzly that is working fine. I'd really like a KMG, but at 6k with the attatchments I want, that ain't gonna happen. Camp10 post a build that he did, and down the road I'll probably build one. I kind of collect parts I might need as I see them at flea markets, yard sales, etc.

Being that Lucky, I sure hope you went ahead and bought a lottery ticket Too!!! Just an awesome haul Crash!! That Burl is Tee totally beautiful. Looks "Exhibition" Grade to me. Might be wrong, But don't think so. You might want to reserve that for your "Top End" knives.

To answer another post, Aluminum could be used in a pommel(Butt end) where you don't want a lot of weight(followed by something not so soft), or as "Spacer" material in a composite handle. Same with the brass.... any of it really can be used that way.

crashdive123

I haven't used it yet. The contact wheels fit so tightly on the motor shaft that I have to remove some metal for the wheels so they slide on and off easier. The other issue with the soft wheel is that I put the 1/4" felt on an 8" contact wheel. I'm using a 10" wheel for my hollow grinds, so I should be using a 10" wheel - mill off 1/4" and then add the felt. I'll let you know.

crashdive123
08-30-2010, 07:25 AM
I should add - the guy that showed me how to use a soft wheel does no hand sanding and you cannot find a single grinder mark on his blades. *sigh* Maybe some day.

Come on Crash, a perfect knife is like a brand new pickup truck. It's almost a shame to scuff them up but that is what you bought them for. It just makes really using them more stressful.

Did you not realize that a clean shop is the first sign of a warped mind!! You never, never ever show a pic of a clean and organized shop. It is traumatizing to the rest of us.

How do you ever find anything? And all that running back and forth putting things away and taking them from exactly where they belong. So much wasted energy when it could all be in a big pile right where you need it!
