Seen plenty of albino's, but that the 1st black one. I've killed a brown coon and a solid white skunk (chicken killers).

Can't say I have, seen plenty of Piebald (Fort McCoy has a lot of the piebald) and one albino doe, (thought I was seeing a ghost of one of the ones I killed), but no black ones.

I got that in an e-mail a while back, I see it made it to Snopes.................
Pretty cool.

We have a painted doe here (same as the piebald???) And several Albino's this county banned the killing of the "off" colored deer.

Wonder if I would get arrested if my jeep hits one of them???

evolution at work? perhaps this color will help the deer blend in better to it's surroundings?
Never seen a black one before. Makes me wonder.

YCC - Evolution is a crazy thing to me. I've studied evolutionary advantages at some length and this is my conclusion on it be it right or wrong. Mutations occur all of the time in any given population. Most are overwhelmingly negative in terms of aiding the survival of a specie. We see the same thing in the human population. We call them cleft palettes, mermaid syndrome, dwarfism and any number of other anomalies (as compared to what we think of as "normal").

However, every once in a while a mutation does aid a specie in survival OR is considered attractive or an asset by the opposite sex of the specie. When that occurs, the genes are passed on through succeeding generations until it becomes "normal" within the population.

As long as deer of the opposite sex think black is beautiful then the genes will be carried forward to become more and more common over an extended period of time.

The county where in I went to college had a fairly high percentage of black deer. The term is melanistic deer. They are rarer than albinos and much rarer than piebald. But in Washtenaw county in Michigan you can see them in peoples front yards eating their landscaping.

I was talking about this thread with my brother and he said that piebalds are actually increasing in number also.

Never seen a black deer. There was a guy that got a piebald last year where I hunt in PA.

My brother shot a piebald in North Georgia last year.
