Hello every one, I have wanted to do a wip for a while now and I have an order from one of my best customers that I wanted to use for the WIP. These knives are both cut from 1/8" CPM154cm. I got the steel in last week and got started this weekend. Here are some pics of my progress so far. They are not exactly as the drawings, cause I changed some things that felt more comfortable. This will be a slow process, since I am busy at the 9 to 5, and other knife orders are keeping me busy. The sheaths will have a shoulder strap to hold both knives, MAYBE.

Thanks for looking.

Did it hurt to start drilling holes in that $80 hunk of steel? :) Great start Frank, cant wait to watch the progress!

What did you order for a heat treat oven?

I ordered a 22.5" Evenheat from USA Knifemakers Supply. KF 22.5 10"Wx6.5"Hx22.5"D w/ Rampmaster control 240v. Now that I paid for it I can eat food other than tuna fish and bologna.

That should work very nice! Mine is only 18" :blushing:

Ok, tonight I used a small file to remove the burrs around the edges from grinding out the shape so I can get a flat surface.

I use the scribe to mark my center line, then grind at a steep angle till I reach the lines. Now I usually am too lazy to use the bubble jig and the steel guides for the plunge. This steel is not cheap and I want to ensure as much as I can that I don't bungle it up. I use a 40 grit blaze belt to get it this far. I will be switching to a new 120 grit belt next. Stay tuned.........

beautiful.

i recently restored a kitchen knife of one of the very high hardness stainless steels [unmarked].

it took forever just to even the edge up and hone it [which is what piqued my interest to keep working at it.]. i finished it on 1800 grit Max wet/dry paper, and i don't think i've ever held a sharper knife in my entire life.

i've got a whole new respect for those fancy cutlery steels.

I have worked with ats34 and it is a tough steel to work with. This cpm154 is like A2 to grind. I have heard it is a very good steel that holds an edge very well and is easier to sharpen in the field. ATS34 and D2 are kind of a pain to sharpen, at least to me they are. Thanks guys!

Hay Pancho, you make me feel better about myself.

Your workbench is almost as cluttered as mine!

A clean workbench is a sign of a sick mind.

I actually cleaned it up a bit. It is usually worse i am sad to say. I know where everything is though.

Today I got off work a bit early and went straight to work. I went up to 220 grit on the bevels. The edge is at .025 or is it .0025?. Any how after grinding the bevels I mark the pin and weight relief holes. After I get them drilled I clean up and check for a flat surface. This guy is ready for the trip to he spa. This week end I will do the same to the skinner knife and will post that one when its at the same point as this one. Thanks for looking.

I finally got around to getting the blade ground and ready for heat treat. I am sending these out for professional heat treatment at Peter's HT in PA. My buddies forge is not suitable for heat treating this steel and my new oven is here but I need to wire up my shop to use it. I also need a way to store liquid nitrogen for cryo treatment.

Thanks guys! Crash the grinder is wayyyyyy more awesome to work with. It is a Bader II, I want to upgrade in the future to something that I can swap out the attachments easier, but this one is cool with the vari speed

Eventually I either want to get a KMG or build my own. Looking at the price of KMG's, building my own is probably the wise option.

I got the blades back from Peter's this weekend and got started cleaning the scale and finishing the blade. These will have a scotchbrite belt satin finish.

Got the blades finished and the maker mark etched. The skinner came out crooked but hey it will not affect the performance of this knife one bit. I will hopefully start cutting the g10 tomorrow and get started on the handle work. Thanks for looking.
