I have set some dead falls latley, but I am having a hard time figuring out what squirells eat that grows in there habitat. i could always bring penut butter or something but i want to use something that if i am lost and surviving i would always have access to if i didnt have any bait on me i could use. any ideas??

I'm not sure I've always used peanut butter, I suggest watching there eating habbits and see what there munching on then try that as your bait, but I don't see them trucking down a tree to eat something that is available to them in the tree tops.

Ryleyboy, in case you didn't know, we have a Forum policy that strictly prohibits any discussion of hunting, trapping, harming, or eating squirrels. :sneaky2:

Oh, sure! :) The best bait to lure squirrels is a perfectly aged (28 days) 24 oz. Porterhouse steak. However, it's only good for a single use and should be replaced with a new steak every hour.

Try that method for 48 hours and let me know how you make out. :)

Interesting, As soon as someone tries this please post a report on the forum!

By the way, that info is for those of you who like to photograph and watch squirrels without interfering with them in any way. Remember, Forum policy strictly prohibits any discussion of hunting, trapping, harming, or eating squirrels. :sneaky2:

they stole all our hickory nuts out of our camp. we gathered the nuts from the area. they also chewed through a friends plastic garbage can to get to there wall nuts that grew in the area. we tried a hickory nut in a trap and got a chipmunk but im sure a squirrel would have gotten to it if the chipmunk didnt.

Ryley, squirrels will eat whatever happens to be in season or whatever they've stored away.

In the spring, squirrels will eat leaf buds and seeds. It's harder to get them to come down on the ground because there is so much food for them in the tree tops. They will even eat baby birds as they begin to hatch.

Summer into fall they go for fungi, leaves and any seeds that are developing.

I think you'd be money ahead to try a squirrel pole or snare if you are intent on catching a squirrel. Squirrels are actually very intelligent and catching one with a deadfall would be hit or miss (pun intended) at best.

Rick? Don't you think you should tell him that squirrel meat is poisonous? :innocent:

Sometimes it's best to find out the hard way. Fried or baked.

Move on from the squirrels. I'm sure there's a buffet going on at the Golden Corral.

Squirrel pole, but if you happen to catch one that has been cutting on green hickory nuts I do believe the South end of a Northbound skunk would be more appealing.

Squirrel pole.

+1. I've never caught a squirrel in a dead fall. The best part about a squirrel pole is that you dont need bait. Just pay attention to where they seem to be going and give them an easier route past your snares.

(quoting from City Slickers/Curley:) "City folks, bah!"

All the squirrels around here are just lucky that we live within the city limits, otherwise there'd be squirrel meat on my table. :sneaky2:

Around here we use a hover dog. The squirrels run up the tree and turn around only to be taken out. Dinner is served.

Not to change the subject or anything, but I have the police frequency on and I just heard that there was a pretty good car accident directly across the street from my office. Dammit! I was there just 2 hours ago. Why couldn't it have happened then?

The ambulances will probably be gone by the time I get back there. :sneaky2:

Sometimes you just can't catch a break! Maybe you can catch them down at the emergency room.

I have the same luck. Just about the time I decided to be a teacher they stoped giving kids brains.

my grandpa used to have a squirell problem at his house. he lived right on the shoreline of lake michigan and used to hit golf balls off his back deck into the lake, then in the summer he would have me and my cousins go out in the row boat looking for them. he kept the golf balls in a rubbermade tub on his deck, and the squirells chewed through it to get at the golf balls. then they would chew those up and leave what was left all over the yard. it used to piss my grandpa off like you wouldnt believe.
