Hey guys I just got commissioned from a good client of mine to build him a 2 piece hunting set. He wants me to use top notch steel so I am going with some cmp154cm, the handles will be stabilized burl, what I am trying to figure out is what a hunting set should look like. Right now I am picturing a bullnose skinner which is kind of like a nessmuck and a drop point hunter. What knife style do you guys think would be in a 2 piece hunting set?

Personally, I would try and talk him out of getting a two piece set. It depends on what you're hunting, but I've got 4 or 5 different styles of hunting knives, and I've only ever used a drop point hunter on a game animal. IMHO anyways. If he/she is stuck on a two piece set, I would think a drop point hunter, and a smaller skinning knife, that has the same handle and design on the blade. In fact, I would say a drop point hunter, and one that looked very similar to the neck knife you just posted. I think the point of being a "set" is for them to look alike. Same handle, tang, rivets etc. You Know?

I asked him what he meant by set and he said he wanted a gutting, skinning and quartering set. I agree a drop point would work, but a bull nose skinner might help in skinning the game. I know Coot likes this style of knife, maybe he will chime in. Thanks flander sander.

I guess I'd get details from him what he expects. I thought I'd post this pic for you. I think it has a neat sheath and might give you an idea or two. This sheath holds two straight blades and has a pocket for a folder. Just an idea to toss out.

What would be the function of the center knife? A boning knife maybe? That sheath IS neat. Thanks Rick!

My mentor made me this several years ago. I've used it for a few moose and deer over the years. I think that a companion drop point or even an upswept blade would be a nice set.

That is nice Camp! I think a gut hook would work out nice, but I will probably include it separate from the knives since I havn't done one yet. I would hate to wast a piece of cpm154 if I goof. Love the handles!

The scales are moose antler and the steel is cpm s30v. Making a gut hook isnt nearly as hard as it looks. Just use a chainsaw file to get the edge and keep a close eye on your file angle. Practice a few on some 1080 and you will be ready in no time.

Great ideas everyone, I am beginning to see a vision, keep'em coming! Now the length on these knives are critical. Too big and you can't maneuver inside the animal and too small means no leverage in separating bone etc........

All of those big bellies look like an Ulu with a side handle.

Rick - that's just his youthful inexperience showing. Once he gets the hand of it, the handles will merge and go all the way around.

a really like the bottom ones. I think for sure all the handles should be matching, just to make it look like a set. You do good work panch0, I'm sure they'll all come out very nice knives!

I would make a two knife set. One skining knife with a heavy rounded blade like the one Camp showed and the other would be a filet knife. I don't know how you guys quarter up an animal but I cut tendons loose around hip socket with a filet knife. It also works well for removing meat from shoulder, neck and ribs. Most knife sets have a boning knife and I just use filet knife in its place. If you hunt and fish both knives can be used for doing both. Heavy skining knife is good for cutting heads off fish. I remove hide cutting down the back from the head, go around the butt hole and down the legs so don't use a gut hook but I would include a stone with the kit. Another nice thing about filet knives is they sharpen fast and easy. It kind of depends what methods you use for dressing out game but this combo would work best for the method I use.

I was going to say I made a set for a friend. A small upswept skinner and a seperate zipper.I see you have already thought of that.

Can't wait to see these.
