I picked up a used toollogic firesteel knife at a yard sale a few weeks ago, it was missing the firesteel, i got it for a 5 dollar bill, so I went online and ordered a rod to fit into it.

Ofcourse it was the right diamater but too long so I cut it down and wedged it on in the cap, and didnt really mess with it after that, untill today I tried it to see what kind of sparks it throws and WOW I was surprised it throws some awsome sparks, so later this evening I may try my hand at a video of that thing in action.

Er, a, why didn't you just order a replacement from Toollogic?

Two very good reasons.

1. I didnt know they sold replacments.

2. Please refer to #1 above.

It only cost me .99 cents to replace it were I bought the firesteel from. plus shipping so in total like a 1.30

An outstanding bargain at twice the price!! I don't know that they sell them either but if you whine and beg I'm sure they'd cave in.

I know this is an older thread. I just recently bought one of these. A few observations.....

1. For the money, I would have expected it to be razor sharp out of the package. I had to sharpen mine and they use such a odd angle that I had to sharpen free hand. It finally cleaned up well using two diamond stones, a medium and a fine.

2. Again, for the price, it should have came with a decent sheath, it came with no sheath, decent or not.

3. The firesteel stays wedged so tight that with wet hands, it will not come out w/o using my leatherman pliers to grab on the end. The tightness does not go along with the hole at the bottom that allows moisture to get in anyways. No, it will not shake loose in carry, but you need another tool of some kind to get it out, even after spraying the o-ring with silcone.

4. On the side, there is a plastic screw with a large head. I took it out, expecting to find something that it does... NOTHING....it is just a plastic screw in the side that does not hold anything, does anything or maybe it is a "Screw to "Know" where......must have been designed for the Gov't.

5. The firesteel does throw a very good spark. But so does a $3 ferro/mag rod and a piece of hack saw blade.

6. The lanyard cannot be removed w/o cutting it off.

7. The side to side play, and the weakness of the pivot area would not lead me to believe it would be used for any real survival carry. Maybe a glove box/fishing box stash at best.

Over all, for the higher price that it is..... and unless you get a really good deal (Less than $15 rather than the $24.00 - $32.95) on it, I do not feel it is worth what the MSRP and what Catalogs/eBay and knife vendors sell them for. I honestly expected a much better knife and handle for the price. The op getting one for $5 is a good price and about what I would pay for one now that I have put it through it paces.

OGL, I found that coating the o-ring with petroleum jelly makes it a lot easier to remove the firesteel.
The one I have has a clip so I wouldn't think it came with a sheath new anyways.
Mine was bought used and had been sharpened.
I don't have any side to side wobble in my blade.
I agree with you on all you said. I wouldnt pay retail to buy one.

I tested one a few years back. It was sort of like an answer looking for a question to me. Marketing does wonderful things.

WG: any petrolium on any rubber ring will destroy it in time (major cause of most BB/Pellet guns) is using a petrolium based lube on the action seals and o-rings. Supposed to use pure silicone or crosman pelgun oil.

Mine came with a clip kit to put on, it was detached in a small lil baggie w/3 screws in the package. The para cord laynard is too short to inter loop it around itself or anything so I added a small carabiner to attach it to a belt loop or to my day pack.

It only took 11 pounds of force to crack the pivot area sideways. I usually use more force than that just whittling a small stick. The pivot pin actually broke through the plastic case.

Here is a few pics of what I did with the ferro/mag rod from the intentionally broken knife. I just grabbed a piece part of an antler from the piece part antler box I have here at the shop. Drilled a 1/4" hole 2" deep, rounded and beveled the front and back of the antler, drilled a lanyard hole. I roughed up the insert end of the rod, added some Gorilla Glue to keep it in the antler and a small leather wrist loop (soon to be braided paracord with a polished and blued piece of hacksaw blade) to make the spark.
