My dad did tank training there in WWII. He said he watched guys fry eggs on the surface of the tanks it got so hot. When they would bivouac at night they guys in the tanks would be caked in mud from the sweat and the dust that poured through the tanks.

When they first arrived by train the advance party had dug a pit, lined it with burlap and filled it full of ice and canteens. He said the guys were pouring off the train, tipping those canteens and just passing out left and right. He said it was pretty funny to stand back and just watch but they had a bunch of sick guys on their hands because of it.
