Only spent one night because it was just too wet. You can read about it on my blog (here (http://bushmastery.blogspot.com/)) but the short of it is
- 33F is a horrible temperature
- melting snow sucks
Beo said he and his boy were going out this week-end. I told him to enjoy the mud. I don't mind the cold but you are right on target with the melting snow.

Read your blog and still sounded fun, love that knife in the pic.
if you are in the woods with just your knife (besides hot rock boiling in a carved bowl) how would ya purify water?

Hanks... thought your name was Rick :D jk, yeah Beo will get plenty wet and muddy but he's a trooper and he'll make due, he'll bit*h about when he gets done though but will have loved every minute of it.
Hey Mitch, When you're out on heavy snow like that do you ever carry a fire pan? That had to be the pits trying to keep it dry and lit.

In hindsight even a pie tin would've been so helpful but I usually just lay a couple wrist-sized sticks in a "raft" and put the fire on that. I just happened to find a big ol' log of punk wood and decided to use that this time. But yea, I had no coals form that night, couldn't let it die down even for a minute.
I just thought a fire pan would have built some coals to lay on that raft (that's about what I use) then keep the fire in the pan going while the coals work on the raft. It doesn't take long to have dry wood and a fire. Of course, the trade off is it's one more thing to carry around.
You might even be able to use three or so layers of aluminum foil. That would be lighter.
