Only spent one night because it was just too wet. You can read about it on my blog (here (http://bushmastery.blogspot.com/)) but the short of it is

- 33F is a horrible temperature
- melting snow sucks

Beo said he and his boy were going out this week-end. I told him to enjoy the mud. I don't mind the cold but you are right on target with the melting snow.

Hey Mitch, When you're out on heavy snow like that do you ever carry a fire pan? That had to be the pits trying to keep it dry and lit.

In hindsight even a pie tin would've been so helpful but I usually just lay a couple wrist-sized sticks in a "raft" and put the fire on that. I just happened to find a big ol' log of punk wood and decided to use that this time. But yea, I had no coals form that night, couldn't let it die down even for a minute.

I just thought a fire pan would have built some coals to lay on that raft (that's about what I use) then keep the fire in the pan going while the coals work on the raft. It doesn't take long to have dry wood and a fire. Of course, the trade off is it's one more thing to carry around.

You might even be able to use three or so layers of aluminum foil. That would be lighter.
