I have been inspired by the incredible work I have seen on here and decided to try it for myself. I will probably never produce the awesome knives of the master craftsmen of WSF, but I reckon I could make something that was at least functional.
I started out with a planer blade, and used a bench grinder and a file. I still have a LOT of work to do with a good whet rock, so it is far from truly finished. The handle is cherry. I sawed a slot in the handle and used a wooden mallet to put the blade in. I used JB Weld to glue it in. Hopefully it will hold! A little stain and a little clear coat, and this is what I've got:

(Hard to guage the size by the picture, but the whole knife is about 10")
It was fun and not as difficult as I thought ... but I imagine it is really hard to produce nicer looking knives.
