I have been inspired by the incredible work I have seen on here and decided to try it for myself. I will probably never produce the awesome knives of the master craftsmen of WSF, but I reckon I could make something that was at least functional.

I started out with a planer blade, and used a bench grinder and a file. I still have a LOT of work to do with a good whet rock, so it is far from truly finished. The handle is cherry. I sawed a slot in the handle and used a wooden mallet to put the blade in. I used JB Weld to glue it in. Hopefully it will hold! A little stain and a little clear coat, and this is what I've got:

(Hard to guage the size by the picture, but the whole knife is about 10")

It was fun and not as difficult as I thought ... but I imagine it is really hard to produce nicer looking knives.

Go try it yourself!

Looks great, and a heck of a lot better than my first one.

Looks just fine from where I sit. Anytime you can make something useful and attractive is pretty much a win/win in my book. Nice job!

That looks like it will work well for ya, congrats on the first of many.

That planer blade is some tuff stuff isn't it.

Pretty cool, but i wouldnt trust a knife that wasnt full tang. Although i have never made a knife, having a partial or internal tang would seem way too complicated and hard to get right, full tang is probably the way to go!

It is full tang. The tang is just under an inch wide all the way to the butt of the handle.

Looks good. Lot better than my first knife. just a piece of flat iron with a hunk of hickory for a handle. If you look close, it almost looks like a knife, lol. Just keep at it, you will only get better.

You done good. It don't need to be pretty to work. I've given away a few that looked decent but for myself I make them to use and keep a half dozen blanks in the shop just in case.

Don't worry about the JB Weld, it will hold. The wood may fall apart but the JB Weld will still be hanging onto the blade.
