Deer, elk and moose provides prosperity and comfort to the backwoodsman. The deer, elk and moose not only provide meat but also valuable raw materials. The hide can be turned into leather, as useful as plastic and metal. Clothing, rope, drinking cups and water bags. Hooves and horns boiled in water for the glue they contain. Hair used for padding. Fat, or tallow, can be eaten or made into soap. Tallow's most important uses, however, are for candles and pemmican. Without electric light, light can be provided by candles, each two feet long by five inches thick. Before candles, people simply went to bed at sunset. The rope is made of thin strips of rawhide woven into a single strand usually sixty feet long.
