so now that its summer and I'm home from the dorms I decided to start working on my first knife. first I went to homedepot in search of a lawn mower blade because I thought it would be a good material to use. I noticed the edger blades sitting right next to the lawn mower blades and how they were flatter and closer to the size I was looking for.(also about 1/4 of the price)

I brought it home and went to work on it.

here's were I am so far.

I've decided not to give it a gut hook like I had originally planned because I just don't have the right tools to do it properly (I've done pretty much everything with my dremel, burned through two cutting discs and 2 grinding bits already), besides I like the way it looks without it. I have some black walnut that I am planning on using for the handle. I'll be sure to post pics when its done, but it will probably take me a awhile to finish it. what do you guys think so far?

Great start! I like the shape of it. I cant wait to see the finished knife.

Gut hooks arent so hard...use a chainsaw file or any small round file and only bevel one edge. The first one I tried was a little blocky but worked fine and looked alright. My mistake was to try to widen it out with the round file. I have made a few more and they have looked fine.

ok heres what i have done so far. i still need to do some sanding on the handle and then i think im going to put a clear coat of polyurethane. i found it is really hard to put a good edge on it. its sharp just not as sharp as i would like it, but i will continue to try to sharpen it. its not perfect but i do have to say i am kinda happy with how it is turning out. ill be sure to post a pic when finish the polyurethane, cause ive used this wood before for a few lamps that i made for my parents, and the wood looks very pretty that way.
