Hi Folks

Just made this:
http://www.kidcouteau.com/sitebuilder/images/hempcarta2-682x513.jpg

I wanted to try making a version of micarta after I watched the Science channel show Invention nation. They were actually making the frames for bikes from bamboo and hemp. They would "paint" the hemp with resin making a sort of fiberglass with it.

Figured I would try it on a blade.

I made the blade full tanged and pinned and epoxied two slabs of black walnut to it then sanded it to a taper towards the blade.

I then wrapped the handle in layers of hemp cord and epoxy. I sanded it a bit and added another layer or so.

Coated the entire handle in epoxy and let sit. Seems to be a real solid handle. Whole thing is about 16" long

I want to make a wooden scabbard to keep with the polynesian look.

Just sharing

Nice job, Kid. You always do good work. Is the blade another from the sawmill?

Have you gotten to use it yet? Just wondering how your hand feels after a while.
Does it get slippery when wet? Scratchy? How is the impact absorption?

Looks Nice!

Very nice work Kid, I love seeing people reuse cast offs and thinking outside the box. You must get quite a few knives from and old saw mill blade and your inovation is impressive. Also good to know I'm not the only one to watches the "geek" chanels,I'm addicted to Discovery and History chs

let us know how it works. It looks like it would make a good trail knife.

While there is no problem re-visiting old threads - just so you know, the author of the thread, and maker of the knife hasn't been around for about three years. Still a cool knife.

I'm betting that he had subscribed to the thread three years ago and got an email alert when somebody posted in it.
