What kind of steel would a tire iron be made of....? Found a short (Flat/spoon shaped) tire iron, and thought the spoon part could be a good digging "Tool", and that maybe part of the handle could be reshaped into a cutting "Tool", with a short 2 1/2" maybe 3" handle retained in between.

One of the steels used for spoon type tire irons that I found while searching was vanadium steel. There are several guys on here that could probably tell you if that was good or bad, but my thinking is that it would have to be pretty tough, with enough flex in it so that it would not shatter when a force was applied.

This one has about a 9/16" dia. handle, however I see they sell some with a 7/8" handle. This would be a lot of stock, if it could be heated, and hammered to 1/4" or 5/16" flat'ish blade. A Digging/Prying tool could be useful.

From what I can find vanadium steel is a good tool steel and well suited for making knives. It has an almost stainless steel quality. I can't find any info on its forging properties. It does seem to be good on the heat treating and tempering end. I say give it a try.

Does it look like the bottom one?

Looks somewhat like the bottom one, but with a ROUND 9/16" Diameter handle. But that bottom one could make a better start to a "Digging/Cutting" Tool.

Vanadium is just an alloy added to steel to make it wear resistant. Lots of steel types have different amounts of it in them. D-2 has quite a bit and O-1 has a small amount...so being vanadium steel doesnt give me any real info on the steel type.

I always heard leaf springs were good stock.

Yes, coil springs are better if you have the tools to work them.
