The Little Red Henhttp://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF (http://www.enchantedlearning.com/stories/fairytale/littleredhen/)
Once upon a time, there was a little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF who lived on a farm http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Farm.GIF. She was friends with a lazy dog http://www.enchantedlearning.com/dgifs/Dog.GIF, a sleepy cat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/cgifs/Catstanding.GIF, and a noisy yellow duck http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Duck.GIF.

One day the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF found some seeds http://www.enchantedlearning.com/sgifs/Seeds.GIF on the ground. The little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF had an idea. She would plant the seeds http://www.enchantedlearning.com/sgifs/Seeds.GIF.

The little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF asked her friends, "Who will help me plant the seeds http://www.enchantedlearning.com/sgifs/Seeds.GIF?"
"Not I," barked the lazy dog http://www.enchantedlearning.com/dgifs/Dog.GIF.
"Not I," purred the sleepy cat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/cgifs/Catstanding.GIF.
"Not I," quacked the noisy yellow duck http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Duck.GIF.
"Then I will," said the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF. So the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF planted the seeds http://www.enchantedlearning.com/sgifs/Seeds.GIF all by herself.

When the seeds http://www.enchantedlearning.com/sgifs/Seeds.GIF had grown, the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIFasked her friends, "Who will help me cut the wheat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wgifs/Wheat.GIF?"

So the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF cut the wheat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wgifs/Wheat.GIF all by herself.

When all the wheat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wgifs/Wheat.GIF was cut, the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIFasked her friends, "Who will help me take the wheat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wgifs/Wheat.GIF to the mill http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wgifs/Windmill.GIF to be ground into flour http://www.enchantedlearning.com/fgifs/Flour.GIF?"

So the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF brought the wheat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wgifs/Wheat.GIF to the mill http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wgifs/Windmill.GIF all by herself, ground the wheat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/wgifs/Wheat.GIF into flour http://www.enchantedlearning.com/fgifs/Flour.GIF, and carried the heavy sack http://www.enchantedlearning.com/sgifs/Sack.GIF of flour http://www.enchantedlearning.com/fgifs/Flour.GIF back to the farm http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Farm.GIF.

The tired little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIFasked her friends, "Who will help me bake http://www.enchantedlearning.com/ogifs/Oven.GIF the bread http://www.enchantedlearning.com/bgifs/Bread.GIF?"

So the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF baked http://www.enchantedlearning.com/ogifs/Oven.GIF the bread http://www.enchantedlearning.com/bgifs/Bread.GIF all by herself.

When the bread http://www.enchantedlearning.com/bgifs/Bread.GIF was finished, the tired little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIFasked her friends, "Who will help me eat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/egifs/eat.GIF the bread http://www.enchantedlearning.com/bgifs/Bread.GIF?"

"I will," barked the lazy dog http://www.enchantedlearning.com/dgifs/Dog.GIF.
"I will," purred the sleepy cat http://www.enchantedlearning.com/cgifs/Catstanding.GIF.
"I will," quacked the noisy yellow duck http://www.enchantedlearning.com/Duck.GIF.
"No!" said the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF. "I will." And the little red hen http://www.enchantedlearning.com/hgifs/Hen.GIF ate http://www.enchantedlearning.com/egifs/eat.GIF the bread http://www.enchantedlearning.com/bgifs/Bread.GIF all by herself.

C'mon guys, there are no good bush food books out there for areas outside the top end or desert. Most of the bush food stuff you read in books and on the web is almost useless if you live in other areas of Aus.
I live on the stuff and although I have read all the books most of my knowledge has come from a lifetime of experimenting and testing for myself. Most of the plants I live on are not found in the books, even the Aborigines have lost the lore here.

Sorry Skully, I can't help with WA native food plants but if you are ever over Vic way, I can help.

Cheers,
Rowan

Hey there Rowan. When you get a chance, forage on over to the intro section and tell us a bit about yourself. http://www.wilderness-survival.net/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=14 Thanks mate.

I must sadly admit I've never tested or experimented with food edibles. The inconvenience of death keeps experimentation at bay for me.

your missing out rick, its kind of like what the gardener feels (i think) when he grows his own food, doing research on edibles then following the plants life for a while then harvesting and eating gives a great satisfaction

I with you on that. It's the experimenting part...you know...Oooh. I wonder what this unknown plant tastes like....that I shy away from. Once I know what it is then it's no longer experimenting....just sayin'
