never had snails myself . . . . or as the French say ” escargot “

but FOOD IS FOOD

as for preparation, i found this link on the net

http://bertc.com/subfive/recipes/gardensnails.htm

the preparation above is a little much for me
i want to keep my snail preparation SIMPLE

snails ( with shell ) in boiling water // snails ( no shell ) in boiling water

raining here right now, i’ll return tmmw morning and collect 15-20 snails

As a kid, spending my summers in Nova Scotia - we'd find an old can (easy to do, as trash was dumped in the bay) boil some mussels and snails - swipe a little butter from the fridge - yum.

Sorry this is just NOT going to happen. They look like they have the same consistancy as oysters which doesn't happen either unless grilled on the half shell with a garlic butter sauce and a sprinkle of pamasian cheese. I just can't get past the slime.:tt2:

A great sauce for them (and for oysters) - Melt a stick(s) of butter. Add grated parmesan cheese and fresh garlic until you get almost a paste like consistency.

They're very good mixed with roughly chopped, cooked new potato, parsley, garlic and finely chopped shallot, then fry the lot in oodles of butter. Mmmmm

Edit: cooking a second time like this seems to get rid of the sliminess.

Ooooooooooh. I use butter, white wine, shallots, garlic, and black pepper in my escargot sauce. The sauce is great with grilled or raw oysters or periwinkles. :tongue_smilie:

Or were you asking Rick? :blushing:

Grill to perfection. Open cold beer. Eat & Drink. :)

(I prefer thick slab bacon. Scallops cook really fast. You may wanna' baste with a bit more dressing while they're on the grill.)

While I have enjoyed snail before. There are health concerns if you handle them or under cook them.

We have an invasive species called the Giant African Snail. The snail is about 8" long.

C'mon man, you shoulda crunched down on one so we could at least get an idea of the texture or burst of "flavor" that may have erupted from them tasty lookin morsels.

That looks like a food that requires growling and a slight left to right head shake while eating them. Raarrrr!

You've got to be careful when frying them, as they can get very tuff. A light sautee in garlic butter with panchetta bread crumbs would be a better way to go.

lets hope you never have to eat those words, you have noticed that this is a wilderness survival and emergency preparedness site, right?
but all kidding aside you bring up an excellent point, eating wild is all about what you can get used to, bring someone to burger king or a fancy resturant that lives close to the land, lets think appalachia area for reference those folks might puke if they had to eat "civilized food" whose better off? well lets hope we never have to find out

not much of a cooker/fryer myself
first thoughts here is looking for the simplest, easiest way of preparation, in the bush > boiling in hot water

maybe, MAYBE, if i came across some wild onions/garlic, i could mix that in with the snails

For sure some wild garlic on Manitoulin Island. My Dad and Pepere used to go pick some every year. Yummy. Looks like a small onion taste like mild garlic. As for the snails, I think I would swallow them whole:tongue_smilie:
