it seems a lot of us on here dont carry survival whistles and/or mirrors with us when we go out in the wilderness. this may just be me misinterpreting things, but it seems like a lot of us wouldnt mind being "lost" out there

I carry both a mirror and a whistle. I think anyone who doesnt carry appropriate signaling equipment and still goes into the woods/desert/artic has lost their minds.

you arent misinterpereting things at all. Cause when i am out in the woods and i have researched the region...I really wouldn't mind being lost at all

I have never been lost in my life, only very CONFUSED for 8hrs or so. I never carry a whistle, I can make one in a few minutes if I wanted one. I wouldn't want to shave with it but I have lots of stuff with me that will flash in the sun. Honestly in the hills in Southern WV, KY or VA following any stream will run into another stream until eventually you will get to one of 3 major rivers, but you will find people way before then.
All of us can have accidents even in territory that we are intimately familiar with. A simple step in a hole can snap an ankle. A miss que with a knife results in severed tendons. Any number of accidents can happen that would prevent you from being able to make it out on your own.
The first rule is to let someone know specifically where you are going and specifically when you will return. That could shorten a SAR into hours instead of days.
Then you need some way to signal those who are trying to find you. It's hard not to spot smoke but if you can't build a fire then signal mirror and whistle may be your next best bet.
I carry both. I carry the Howler whistle. It is a British made, SOLAS approved whistle that does not contain a pea. I also carry the Starflash mirror.
By the way, Tony. If your mind is carrying a mirror and whistle, you wouldn't lose it. :O)

One of my pack's (osprey aether 75) female-type buckles acts as a whistle, which I didn't even realize until I was moving my pack a week ago :P My compass (Silva Trek 420) has a mirror built right in. Therefor I don't need to waste weight by including any more in my emergency kit. Multiuse/function at its best :D

Yep, you never know what might happen. A whistle is small, lightweight, and you can blow it all day if need be (try shouting all day - you can't).
