I'll be haeding to a small creek in the carolina lowlands real soon. She is blackwater...called the Pocalla Swamp! The wildest place I know. Saw a Carolina Puma there some years ago! The hair stands on my neck just thinking about her!

Paper birch (Betula papyrifera) is easy peasy to identify. It's also called canoe birch for obvious reasons. Once you see it you won't forget it.

River birch (Betula nigra) is another easy one. We have some genuinely HUGE River birch here along the....wait for it....rivers.

aparently the birch bark is heated to the combustion point inside if a container. the oil is released as a vapor that condenses on the sides of the vessel. the tinture runs down the sides and is collected in a pan situated below it. interesting process i thought that i may try it. the oil must be kept away from air so that it doesnt erupt into flame, and the distilation container must cool the condensing vapors rapidly, and collect them in the bottom in an air tight all in one unit....

a really good hand drill to make fire is made of a sycamore fire board and a stalk from the horse weed. i have seen an ember started in 4 seconds..... thats impressive.
