When I was at Sheffield Knife Supply on Monday I picked up quite a few things. There was some of the most gorgeous Damascus stock there, but way, way out of my price range ($400 for a 4" X 12" piece). Even if I could have afforded it, I would not have felt comfortable grinding on it yet. There were some nice Damascus blanks though that I kept coming back to. I finally bought a little blank and some Desert Ironwood for scales. I'm working on a knife for a friend right now, but this will be the next project when I'm done with that.

Who would have thunk that a bunch of woodsie old kermudgeons would be using words like beautiful or gorgeous. Check your slip, guys, we might be showing.

That's why I didn't put a ruler in the picture. It has an overall length of about four inches and I was afraid that one of you guys would have said dainty.:innocent:

I'm going to have to look at it a while before I start cutting. Both ends have features I really like.

I love damascus and iron wood, a great combo. Thats gonna look sweet. A bit of advice, the last time I worked with iron wood and was lazy and didn't use a respirator I got a nasty cough that didn't go away for a couple of weeks. Can't wait to see the finished knife.

pancho makes a good point. and it is also one of the dangers of knapping.. some of the woods pick up a lot of silica when growing. so when you cut it, it's not just sawdust you might be breathing, but also little tiny shards of glass (silica). Wear a dustmask when cutting highly silicated woods!! Sand hickory comes to mind as one around here that could be dangerous.

There are other woods that have a toxicity when in a fine dust. Zebrawood and purple heart comes to mind. Any way it would be good to check some of the exotic woods before you work on them.

HEre is a link for a wood toxicity table

I cut out, glued and pinned the scales yesterday. Sanded today. I found out very quickly with this wood that an extra light and quick touch is called for. It will burn very easily. The wood was sanded with 220, 400, 600 and then a light pass on the buffing wheel. No polishes or finishing coats.

Crash That has got to be, from looks alone,THE most beautiful knife yet!! Since it is so beautiful (almost like jewelry), You could make a sheath and give it to the Missus. Judging from the size, it would make either a beautiful "Necker-lace" or a Garter Belt knife. I can see all the other women gathering around her and ooh-ing and aah-ing all over that! Listen in as they say "Where did you get That?" She says(nonchalantly), "Oh it's just something my Hubby made me." Them: "Do you think he could make me one?"(insert many pairs of envious female eyes) Crash that is sheer genius!!

no finish on the handle? that is truly a remarkable piece. I love the compact size and the shape of the handle. Great job. I want to ask you to make me a wahintke for dry scraping, but I'm afraid I couldn't afford it! Is there any chance of you making an ugly one? lol

Great job Crash! I love it!
