I went on a road trip today to a knife supply warehouse (Sheffields) and an exotic wood outlet (Amazon Exotic Hardwoods). All I can say is wow! Here are a few pictures from the wood store.

Here are some of the various woods in use. The first is a bowl that has been turned from a black palm, and the second is a petrified piece of black palm.

Some of it was, but some of it was quite reasonable. The big chunk in the last two pictures was $165. One of the guys bought it. He figured that he could get 16 sets of scales out of it, so under $11 per knife.

Good list Ken. Thanks!

My pleasure!

My kid brother (a banker by profession) is an avid and highly accomplished wood-worker. Over the year's, he's built up a workshop that most men would kill for. Mostly industrial grade tools, like a table saw with an 8' x 12' roller surface and a lathe that weighs about 1,400 lbs. A few hundred hand files, about 200 assorted clamps, stuff like that. His tool cabinets themselves (all made by him) are premium furniture quality.

Sooooo, I had this piece of wood I had picked up somewhere years ago. It was stained, so I'm not sure what it was, but it was about 4" x 8" x 54" long and weighed well over 100 lbs. It was beautiful stock, and there was no way I could have done it justice, so I gave it to my brother. Can't wait to see what it becomes!

I was surprised to see Hickory and Pecan separated out. Virtually the same in my book. Depending on where you get either of the woods it can be hard or impossible to tell them apart.

I do know that Maple is special in that it has open cells and more readily excepts paint, stain, and finishes than other hardwoods.
