I don't usually do day trips to the forests, I do weekend trips or longer as much as possible.
Tom - I'd add a survival mirror. It can be used for personal grooming as well. A sticker in the back of a calf can be pretty hard to see without one. A whistle is a good thing to have. Some way to treat water as Smok said. I'm not much on Jersey because it is made of cotton and cotton robs you of body heat when wet and it takes forever to dry.
Tom looks pretty good to me and cotton gloves can be waterbroofed just as well as anything else plus could be used for tender or char cloth where wool and synthetics don't do to well coton also makes a good wick for a candle or lamp to burn animal fat or even pitch pine.
Good points Hop! Another view of the same tree is always a good thing. Hadn't considered the other uses of cotton and should have. Stuck too tight inside the box, I guess.
I like wool and use it a lot in the winter but day in day out jersey gloves are versatal and cheap to replace.
Ummm....food? Yep I'd definitely take food, some warm clothes and a little first aid kit and a whistle and a tarp....geez it's getting pretty full already. Guess I can keep my knife on my belt and wooden matches in my pocket.
