It's actually quite good. I don't care for whole wheat but the refined flour version is pretty good.

A friend found a glass jar with hardtack in it while cleaning his closet. The last time he made hardtack was five years earlier. So he ate some. Brought the rest to camp and we put it in some water tossed in some rosemary and fried up the dough in butter. Yum it was good. Turned out like a bready pancake.

I don't think it's bad at all, we had some with our coffee at Rendezvous, kinda like the orginal coffee cake.

And he does mean original coffee cake. Harder than hammered ... well, you know.

That's why you call it that, have to soak it in the coffee til you can bite off a piece.

Back durin' the civil war (as opposed to an "uncivil" war?) the grunts would dip it in their salt pork as they cooked it. The stuff was so hard they actually called them "tooth dullers!" :cool2:

LOL, did I see you around?... memory not so good.....

That's a different time period, but have been known to hang with some of those boys, some Rendezvous aren't real particular as whats considered "period" dress or camps.

Hardtack has been around in some form or another for a looooog time.......and sometimes taste like it.

When asked about getting into Civil war period, or any organized company etc, I always tell them I came to the mountains to get away from people like that.

When I went on vacation I would get asked, Where you heading.....I would just say....Back in time about 160 years or so.
