I believe in his earlier shows, he used different types of knives. I don't know about anything else within the last year or so. I think one time he once used a Gerber Gator.

Well, it used to be the Bayely S4 but they had a falling out and now they even have a "we don't know nothing about no Bear" statement on their web site.

2 words...Powder Metallurgy = Junk IMO. It is a cheap manufacturing alternative. We did a Six Sigma project on the stuff. Mostly comes from China and it didn't pan out.

You can buy about a 8 RAT knives for the cost of that one B.G. knife. That is just crazy. I have used RAT and RC knives for a long time and can honestly say that B.G. would be just as well served with these and have about 6 life times of back ups/spares for the same price. The B.G. knife is a good blade I'm sure but there is nothing quite like paying for all the hype. Get a RC3 or RAT3 and you'll be a whole lot ahead of the game with a bunch of $$$ left in ya pocket. Just my take on the issue. Take care.

Shoot! If Bear's signature isn't on it then it just went down in value a bout $600! :innocent: My, my, how quick they are to distance themselves from the "mega-star!" :sneaky2:

Oh don't worry, it only costs $700... wait $700, i could buy my dream compound bow for that. I have made a knife that is identical, which only cost $50 to make (including a new bench grinder). Overall, it is a good knife, but not for that price. They have just turned it into paying for the Bear Grylls label

The steel used in the Bayley S4 is CPM 154CM....ok, they dont say that but they give the make up of the stuff and it is the same as CPM 154CM! Not junk steel. The Crucible powdered metal is a very highly refined steel with a very even blend. If you use stainless, it is the best stuff. The knives I just made are CPM S30V and this stuff works like nothing I have used before. It is a high priced knife but it isnt junk.

I'll take your word for it Camp, sounds as if you know alot more than I do. All I drew off of is powdered metal. I don't know squat about stainless. As my experience with stainless hasn't been good. We use 304 stainless and 306 at work for marine applications. Maybe you could enlighten me on some stainless materials used for knife manufacture. I have never liked a stainless knife maybe it is because I don't know what to look for. I'll go ahead and retract my comment.

To be honest, I really dont care for stainless knives either but if I cant talk someone out of it than I will use the CPM (Crucible powdered metal) steels. It is going to be tough to get their steel for a little while though because Crucible went through bankruptcy and the company that bought the knife steel part of the business is moving very slowly to get it out. The prices they are listing for it (if it ever comes back to the market) is much higher as well.

I must have missed this part earlier. What happened to cause a "falling out?

...And what will poor Bear do for a knife now?

I did just notice on tonight's North Africa episode that Bear was carrying a different blade. I couldn't tell what it was but, the blade had a different profile and was blackened. The handle was also different, with a bit of a guard at the blade.

I found one of these at a garage sale for 5 bucks, in good condition,, This thing is indestructible/

This is the post-1942 survival knife/machete included with the pilot's "bail-out" kit. This one is made by Camillus.

Grips are of black plastic. These knives came originally with a sheet-steel edge cover (missing on this example). Examples made by Imperial came with a pistol-holster-style sheath
