I was going to pull it out from annealing but, it was still hot. Maybe tomorrow.

I've just started vacation but, the honey-do list is pretty long. We'll see.

I found a little time to work on this project so, I fired up the forge. Here are some pics after a little hammering. Do you have any suggestions for a blade style?

Looks like a great start. As far as blade style - it looks like it's going to have a big belly - me likey.

I wanted to thin the blade with out grinding / sanding. I kind of like the hammered look too. I can cut and shape to most any design.

Your the artist...you pick the blade style! I like the hammer marks also on some forged knives. Can't wait to see the finished knife!

I don't know, but when I looked It seemed to be lending itself to a Nessmuk design. Sort of anyway.

Slowly but Shirley (that's for rick).

You've got a good start on a skinner. Nessmuk, you would have to beat it a lot more. Clip the back of the tip and you got the shape of a Buck skinner or a Green River.

Shirley that's gonna be a good lookin' knife. Love the scales (rasps) left on it. Sort of looks like snake scales. You could name the knife Awanyu. It's a serpent that is guardian of the water in Tewa culture.

It's starting to take it's shape with the rough sanding. I'm thinking about some homemade scales.

I have some seasoned pecan wood that I smoke fish & fowl with and, I thought I'd make scales. The Northerners pronounce it: (pē kän′, -kan′; pi-; pē′kän′, -kan′). The Southerners say: (pee-can) and unless you've spent days bent over picking them up, you should say "pee-can" when speaking to southerners (just a little tip).

Anyway, It's tough wood! My first result was a failure.

Just to add to Rebel's explanation of the proper pronunciation of Pe-can. In every word in the English language that has -can- in it, it is pronounced the same way as in tin can. Ex. American, Candidate, Cancellation, Canopy, etc. With all other words this is true.... except for the nut. Then it is pe-con. I ask, are you an Americon? Do you vote for your favorite Condidate? Are you going to Concel your dinner reservations? When you camp do you put up your dining Conopy?:innocent:

I got this idea to add a ferro rod and perhaps one of Rick's button compasses to the scales.

So, I ground out a seat for the rod. Here are a couple pics:

I'm gonna make it a WSF D.O.C. auction. I hope it turns out well. The rasp is somewhere in the 50 + year range. It's been made in the traditional way. A hard wood fire to anneal it. A charcoal fire with hammer and anvil to shape it. Followed up with a charcoal fire to harden and temper. It'll be next week before I can post pics.

I've got a gap in the handle between the steel and the antler that I'd like to fill. Any suggestions?

I use vulcanized fiber as a spacer for nearly all my carbon steel knives. It looks good and I think it gives just a little bit more of rust protection...just in case you dont get the epoxy everywhere.

My skill level just isn't there yet. This is the 4th or 5th handle I've tried to put on and the grind on the blade is wavy. Maybe, in a couple of years and with a lot more practice, I'll be able to have something descent. Until then, I think it best to retract my post, #43 of this thread. I sure wouldn't want someone to feel they got a bad deal.

Thanks to everyone for their advise and encouragement.

Thanks folks. I should take the Mrs advise and take a class.

I did make a neat discovery this evening that I'd like to share. After sanding the antler I applied brown shoe polish and buffed it a little. I think it highlighted the cracks and made it look cool.

Before and after:
