I was working with the guy from Hawaii and he was telling me about a method of trapping hogs in Hawaii and I thought I'd pass it along:

He said they would take a 55 gallon barrel with one end open and bury it at an angle. Then, grease the barrel and bait it. The hog would go in and then couldn't back out.

It'd be my luck that I go our for a bacon sandwich and get stuck in some dadburn barrel.

Ever heard the joke with the punch line: 'Next week its your turn in the barrel'?

Do they use that trap so they can kill and eat the hog or so they can safely make love to it?

sarky, I would guess it was to preserve the food. you opened the door so I'll ask...

What is the BEST way to preserve your food?

Keep it alive till you are ready to eat it!!

The best trap I've ever used for hog is two slices of bread.

oops... I forgot to give credit to whom pointed out to me that little tidbit.
Mac showed his arapuca bird trap and talked about people in Brazil keeping live animals on their porch. they named these pets for the day they would eat them.. i.e. thursday :D

If it's meat, i usually smoke it or make jerky out of it.

Seems simple enough but it's hard to imagine that a 55 gallon drum would be deep enough to keep the pig trapped.
