I asked a friend to make me a Sgian Dubh Scottish knife to go with my uniform for the pipe band I'm in. I just picked it up a few days ago. Nice pattern and wicked sharp. The stone on the end is amber. Now I have to make sheath. I'm quite pleased.

Karl, Have you ever been to my Town? They hold the "Highland Games" here every year. Glasgow Kentucky, at the Barren River State Park Resort.

Well Poco!! I Have two. This is a twist. I'm a woodwind player (major in college), learning tenor drum but playing bass drum. Never carried a bass in parade before this one.

No, I have heard a lot about the famed games. Father, Son and Friends are a great bunch to hang around the camp fire with. I've wanted to go but timing never works out.

Gryf,
We have alot more in common I see, here are a few pics of me. I play the bagpipes for the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office Pipes & Drums, and for the Cincinnati Emerald Society Police & Fire Pipes & Drums, also I bass drum for both bands when our drummer is missing in action. I actually designed the bass drum head for the Emerald Band and drew the celtic knot shamrock, neckbone graphics did our drumheads.

Good heavens! Lot's of talent in such a short thread.

1st. You should be very proud of that knife. It's a beauty! I like the amber end, too.
2nd Beo - You've been hiding some talent if you did the design. That's pretty impressive my friend!!!

Nice blade! Does he forge his own damascus?

Yeah I can draw a bit.
Gryf, that is an awesome Sgian Dubh, love and it is functional which is rare in a pipe band Sgian Dubh as most are just for traditional show.

Great looking knife. I was going to ask the same question as Camp10 did about forging his own Damascus Steel.

Yes, he makes damascus, and teaches as well. He showed me a knife he just finished using cable to make the damascus sweet swirly pointy stabby buahahaha.

The WV highlanders were lined up for a parade in Washington for the 4th and one of the members asked an officer if it was OK to have the blades. The officer looked at the blade and commented thats a fine blade, at least someone is armed and handed it back. Its not like we could blend in the with crowd. We wear the Loud MacLeod tartan.

Is the amber clear or have ancient debris still?

gryffynklm
01-12-2010, 10:29 PM
It has exactly that debris. I can't identify what it is but it doesn't look like insect.

The closest I ever got to a Sgian Dubh was the Gerber Guardian I called all through my teen an college years. Being a McIntyre it seemed like the natural thing to do. I have yet to wear a kilt though, that's a group activity IMO. One man in a kilt, people wonder, twenty men in kilts, they cross the street. Mac

Seems a lot of us of the gewd blood on these boards. My mother is a Davie and my father's mother was a Cameron. Most of my cousins that come to visit are from my grandmother's clan McCann or the Wilson clan that my aunt married into.

My mother was born in raised in Glasgow.

I asked my dad once what we were. He said,

"You're half Scotch, the rest is water."

True it is.

Hi lucznik,

Above is Dan's web page and has contact info. I don't know what you mean by make them commercially. Like buying a lot of six???????

Dan makes custom knives and other ornamental iron work. This isn't his full time gig so its not a here is my catalogue pick what you want arrangement. I put down a deposit and waited patiently for my knife. His work is excellent and the knives are meant to be used. A knife like that should go for around $250 to $300 ebony handle amber stone and costume silver work.
